Secretive N. Korea shows off monuments, as lights go out in Pyongang

Our hotel in Pyongyang was situated on an island in the middle of the Taedong river, so that to get to the city you needed to walk along the island, and then across a long road bridge. This inaccessible location seemed no accident, and we were only given free time in the late evening.

The hotel had a casino run by Chinese from Macau, who also provide the serving staff - presumably so North Koreans don't corrupt their morals. However, in a move of ideological chutzpah, a display in the vestibule listed Japanese atrocities during the occupation. The hotel had a golf course which attracted Chinese tourists.

I decided to escape from the hotel one night when the guides were busy with other tourists. It was dark and raining, and due to the lack of street lighting, I felt pretty sure no one would spot me as a foreigner. I put on a black skirt, white top and sandals to look like a Korean, and put a scarf over my fair hair, which didn't look too odd since it was raining.

I crossed the long road bridge with treacherous holes in the pavement. People cycled past me and a few cars caught me in their headlights, but no one reacted. I went down a footbridge into an unlit street with uneven pavements, passed a large institutional building, and had a look at some apartment blocks, which had entranceways designed just for bicycles...

25 июня 1950 в 15 часов по средне корейскому времени пара истребителей Як-9П с опознавательными знаками северокорейских ВВС появилась над аэродромом Кимпхо вблизи Сеула, где лихорадочными темпами велась эвакуация американцев в предвидении скорого захвата южнокорейской столицы наземными поисками КНДР. "Яки" обстреляли вышку КДП, уничтожили топливную цистерну, а затем повредили стоявший на земле военно- транспортный самолет С-54, принадлежавший ВВС США. Одновременно звено "яков" повредили 7 самолетов ВВС ЮКА в аэропорту Сеула. В 19:00 "Яки" вновь штурмовали Кимпхо - добили С-54. Это был первый боевой эпизод войны в Корее и дебют северокорейских ВВС...

Бегство из Северной Кореи

По меньшей мере семерым корейцам, преодолев пограничные укрепления, удалось бежать из коммунистической Кореи в Россию. Пятеро мужчин и одна женщина с грудным ребёнком вечером 10 ноября, преодолев многочисленные проволочные заграждения, перешли российско-корейскую границу в Ханкайском районе Приморского края.

At least seven Koreans made it through the border zone from communist Korea into Russia. On the evening of 10 November 1999, five men, one women and an infant crossed through numerous barbed wire barriers into the Khankai district of Maritime Territory...

North Korea: The Poeple's Tragedy

Tens of thousands of people die of hunger every year in North Korea. Tens of thousands are being held in concentration camps and prisons for "political" crimes, which may consist of careless words about the difficult conditions in the country. Such are the results of 50 years of communist rule. A conference devoted to the problem of political prisoners in North Korea and refugees from that country was held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, from December 1 to 3. Well-known Chinese dissident Garry Wu and French publicist and political scientist Alain Becanson were present at the conference, as well as former political prisoners, a former guard in a prison camp and people who were able to flee the country through Russia and Burma recounted their lives in North Korea. The Seoul conference was organized with the financial support of the National Endowment for Democracy (USA).

Двести тысяч человек умирает ежегодно от голода в Северной Корее (КНДР). Десятки тысяч людей содержатся в концентрационных лагерях и тюрьмах за "политические" преступления, которые могут состоять в необдуманно высказанных словах о тяжёлой жизни в стране. Таковы результаты 50-летнего правления в Северной Корее коммунистической партии. Конференция, посвящённая проблемам политзаключённых в КНДР и беженцев из страны, прошла в столице Южной Кореи Сеуле 1-3 декабря. На ней выступили известный китайский диссидент Гарри Ву, французский публицист и политолог Ален Безансон; о своей жизни в Северной Корее рассказывали бывшие политзаключённые, люди, которым удалось бежать из страны через Россию и Бирму, бывший охранник северокорейского лагеря. Конференция в Сеуле была организована при финансовом содействии National Endowment for Democracy (США).

DPRK SHIP SUNK IN RUSSIA

The Korea Times reported that the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reported that a DPRK vessel with 241 people on board ran aground late November 9 off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's far east during a storm. A rescue ship was sent to the scene, but the crew was to be taken off by helicopter for safety reasons, the regional sea rescue centre said.  The 136-meter (450-foot) ship ran aground on rocks on the north side of the peninsula.  Rescuers said that the vessel had been holed, but the crew managed to bail out.
