INFORMATION ON DAVID 8-8-2003
David was a prominent Weaver. He made many coverlets for friends and family. His Loom, along with a few of his coverlets, are in the Kalona Textile Museum in Kalona, IA. He kept a very detailed day book of who he made material for, when it was made and how much he was paid for it. He also had a Pattern book for each of his coverlets. The pattern book was in color and had the names of each pattern. It also contains ingredients for making dies for the fabric.
Both the origianal Day Book and Pattern Book are in a museum in New Mexico, along with a few coverlets.
My family recently obtained a black and white copy of both books from Dean Bender.
My family also has an original coverlet woven by David. The pattern is called Irish Rose. It is white green and red.
Picture of the coverlet Coming Soon.

AT 87, AVOCA HORTICULTURIST WILL ADMIT HE'S GETTING OLD
(Avoca)
"I can't work like I used to." declares J. E. bender, Avoca horticulturist, who will be 87 in September. "I'm getting too old." Never-the-less Mr. Bender, alert and energetic, spends some time each day working about his place. For fifty years he has propagated strawberries. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bender came to Avoca from Oakland, where they had lived for fifty-two years. Mrs. Bender who is 85, does not enjoy good health as does her hard-working husband. They have been married fifty-seven years. For a time Mr. Bender practiced medicine in Oakland, but he gave it up in favor of devoting more time to horticulture. On numerous occasions he has supplied pulpit services for absent ministers.
Reads Extensively.
Mr. Bender reads extensively and his English, chosen accurately and deliberately, is excellent. He has read through the bible several times, having completed one reading this year. He reads a few magazines, with Readers' Digest as the reigning favorite, and his daily paper. Ministerial books have always appealed to him. He has always been an ardent church follower. "Early to bed, early to rise." is a time-tried motto for Mr. Bender. A little siesta after dinner is usually on his afternoon schedule, and his head-back napping position is a familiar sight to neighbors. He goes to town but seldom, only when he wants to make a purchase. He has outlived all his old friends, so old-time visits are remembrances of past years.
Plan for Future.
Mr. Bender continues to plan for the future, and his willingness to discuss the present is very noticeable. Over 1,500 quarts of strawberries were produced this season with the help of from seven to twelve pickers. Local grocery stores distributed most of the crops. A modern sprinkler piped from a private well and driven by an electric motor makes irrigation easy. "Modern methods of plant propagation must be equalled if success is desired," philosophizes Mr. Bender. A junior garden tractor is planned for next season. Mr. Bender is assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bender. His son Howard is employed in town, but he usually works until dark in the evening. Six or seven varieties of strawberries are grown, and a new, experimental type, the Boyson berry will be ripe in a few days. Raspberries, blackberries, grapes, and currents are also grown.
