AREQUIPA

Arequipa,
in Misti's foothill, a beautiful snowy 5,500 mts. cone, is sorrounded by
big majestic vulcanos, in one of wich was found the world wide famous "Momia
Juanita". Located at 2360 mrts. of altitude from the sea, in the spurt
of the peruvian Andes, is the second largest city of Perú. |

Now
as the "Ciudad Blanca" (White City) because of the special witheness
of the "sillar", a volcanic stone abundant in this zone, that
was employed tu construct their magnificense temples, like "LaCompañía",
convents like Santa Catalina, and palaces like Huasacache, wich was even
know like the Foundetor Palace. It's beauty, special light and landscapes
facinates the visitors. |

Because
of it's extraordinary wheather, dry and limpid, with more than300 sunny
days a year, with temperatures non highest than 25 degrees, and rarely
less than10 degrees, it is know as the city of the "Ever Blue Sky"
("Eterno Cielo Azúl"). |

In Arequipa's
Departament is located the Colca Canyon, the deeper of the world, native
land of the Condor. The higest mountains that surround it are populate
of auquenidos, that's why has traditionally knowed like the first producer
of wool, wich exports, specially the one from the Alpaca and the finest
Vicuña. |

|
Arequipa
is also the most important comercial and industry center of the souther
Perú. Crossed by ways, trains and plains is sorrounded of big and
famous minning sites, wich cause to be selected to celebratethe every two years a World
Minning Meeting. |
|
|
Arequipa,
also know as the "city chief" because of the political restlessness
of it's people, has near a million residents, and has a lot of hotels to
receive the turists, and bring them all kind of transportation and communication
facilitys, like any modern city. Here took place the XII Juegos Bolivarianos in october 1997. It
has all the necesary things to have succes in every task of this kind. |

Finally,
Arequipa is basicly a half-breed city of strong personality, and has brougth
to Perú a great number of men and women that had important positions
in arts, politicians and letters, like: Sor Ana de los Angeles Monteagudo,
Juan Pablo Vizcardo y Guzmán, Mariano Melgar, Alvarez Thomas, Nicolas
de Pierola, Francisco Mostajo, José Luís Bustamante y Rivero,
Víctor Andrés Belaunde, Cardenal Juan Landázuri Ricketts,
and recently the prominet writter Mario Vargas Llosa, are some few of them. |
