Much of the information on this page was collected by my great grandfather Edgerton Ross Laughlin (generation 5).  I am told that he spent many years collecting the information, and hunt and pecked the information onto typed pages.  Many researchers have found his work valuable in their quest to find the past.  I will include links to some addditional Laughlin pages here that I found interesting.

Descendants of Alexander V. Laughlen
No author is given for the following poem, but it was in the book by Edgerton Ross Laughlin, and though he included many poems in the book, he gave author credit, which leads me to believe that the author of this poem is Edgerton Ross Laughlin.

Stone monuments tell the deeds,
Of some great men, but some,
As true and great have no such fame.
Their lives, lived true and well,
Are now reflected in their children's name.

There is no stone at Alex Laughlen's head,
No eulogy of what he did and said,
Of how he left Scotland behind,
In New York a home to find:
How he toiled all his life,
Kept a little home and wife,
How the Revolution changed it all,
Did his duty when he got the call,
And enlisted in the British file:
Of the many years in rebel prisons vile,
How the jailors on him spat,
Till it seemed his mind would snap:
How the foe took all he had
Except his wife, his girl, his lad;
How he bore both cold and damp
On the long, long wintry tramp
On the way to liberty true
Land of Ontario, land of the new;
How he worked with tools crude,
Hewed out a home, simple and rude
When his life on earth was through,
Told his friends his wishes few
“I love Ontario, bury me here
Where all my friends will ever be near.”
No monument did you say?
What finer monument can you lay,
Than a life, so good and true,
That friends will miss you when
You're through?

Generation No. 1

1.  ALEXANDER V.1 LAUGHLEN was born 1756 in Sterlingshire, Scotland, and died January 30, 1822 in Ernestown Twp., Upper Canada.  He married MARY.

Notes for ALEXANDER V. LAUGHLEN:
Alexander was born in Sterlingshire, Scotland in the year 1756.  In the year 1774 he left his home is Scotland and emigrated to America, landing at port of New York where he remained but a short time and then travelled up the Hudson river by Batteaux to Albany and finally settled at Ballstown in Saratoga Co., NY.  He remained quietly here until the year 1777 when the prevailing turbulence and troubles arising out of the War of Independance caused him to go to the city of Albany where he enlisted in the Royal Americans (Loyal Rangers), a corps then being formed under the authority of Gen. Sir William Howe by Captain Daniel McAlpin of the 60th Regiment in concert with Lieut. Col. William Edmonstonof the 48th Regiment.  Five hundred and seventy two (572) men were quickly enrolled in this corps which was under the command of Major Daniel mcAlpine and was known as major McAlpines Corps, under the command of Captain Wm. Fraser, with Lieut. Thomas Fraser, was ordered to go to Upper Canada but after ten days march the party was surprised and captured by a body of Americans and was conducted to Albany where Alexander Laughlen remained in cloes confinement.  Later on he was transferred to prisons in New England.  Altogether he spent three or more years in prison and suffered many hardships.

Upon being released in 1780, he made various attempts to rejoin the British forces but found it impossible to do so.  At some time during this period he was married.  his wife was Mary S. but we do not know her maiden name.  Some say it was Snider.  Having a young family made it impossible for him to renew his endeavors to escape until the year 1788, wen in the company with others with a like desire, succeeded in passing through the wilderness in the depths of winter by the Onondga trail to the shores of lake Ontario and in tn vicinity of Cape Vincent they crossed the ice on sledges to the city of Kingston in Upper Canada.  He finally settled in the Township of Ernestown in the Midland District. Land was given to the Loyalists by draing lots.  Alexander received the west half of lot 17, concession 2, Ernestown Twp., on 18 Oct 1789.  Alexander donated land on which was built the old Lutheran church near Odessa, Ont., and on this land is a cemetary.  he bought 200 acres being lot 28, concession 3, Ernestown Twp. from Mrs. Elizabeth O'Neil in 1806 and resided on it until his death on 30 Jan 1822.  he was married in New York State in 1782, Dec 24th.

Alexander had five children, some of whom retained the name Laughlen but others became known as McLaughlin.

In 1798, Alexander Laughlin applied for Crown lands and the note following was signed by Capt. Wm. Fraser and Thomas Fraser and presented to the government, "I do hereby certify that the bearer, Alexander Laughlen, has been taken prisoner with us when endeavored to come to Canada in the spring of 1777 and carried prisoner to Albany and from thence to New England where he suffered much for his loyalty and attachment to the British government, given under our hands at Edwardsburg this 9th day of February 1798."
The following petition was signed by Jas. Dearin, Lodewik Miller, John Dearin and John S. Pinkey="This is to cerify all gentlemen who it may concern that Alexander Laughlen was a good faithful subject to King George during the last rebellion and suffered domestic violence by the hands of the userpers, was taken prisoner going to the British and was kept three years in close confinement which was a very hard fate and now means to make his residence under protection of King George, given under hmy hand this 24th day of May in the year of our Lord 1788 and in the 28th year of the reign of our Soverein Lord George the Third by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith."

It is said that Alexander's brother from Scotland, Glasgow, visited Alexander's children in Upper Canada after Alexander died.  The name of this brother is unknown.

The parents of Alexander Laughlen were said to be weavers in Scotland.

Alexander was given lot (west half) 17, second concession of Ernestown Twp.  Alexander gave the homestead to his son John who later sold it to Harriet R. Booth.

Alexander Laughlen bought lot 28 from Elizabeth O'Neil who receive it from the Crown.  Alesander gave this farm to his son James.  James gave it to his sons John and Henry 2 Nov 1838.  On 25 Feb 1851, John sold his share to his brother Henry.  henry willed the farm to his wife Margaret Hymers Laughlin.  She deeded the farm to her son Alexander Hymers Laughlin on 7 Apr 1892.  he in turn deeded the farm to his son Harry F.
