In 1981, Lars Ulrich meets up with James Hetfield and together they form Metallica along with Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. In 1983, The band moves to San Francisco and, because of Ron quitting, they get new bassest, Cliff Burton. Later they move to New York, kick out Mustaine and take in new guitarist, Kirk Hammet. They release their debut album, KILL 'EM ALL. In 1984, their second album, RIDE THE LIGHTNING is released. It is on Billboard's top 200 for 50 weeks. In 1986, they release MASTER OF PUPPETS. It quickly goes platinum in the U.S. While on tour in Europe, their bus skids on an icy road and Cliff Burton is killed. In 1987, back in San Francisco, they make Lars' garage a studio and release an album of cover songs called GARAGE DAYS REVISITED. They now have a new bassist, Jason Newstead. In 1988, CLIFF 'EM ALL, a dedication, is released. Later, in September, their fourth album, ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL is released. In 1991, The fifth album, METALLICA is released, it is later referred to as The Black Album. In 1992, while on tour with Guns 'N Roses, James Hetfield steps into some pyrotechnics and is horribly burned. The concert is stopped short and the crowd goes insane and destroy the arena. The band decides to take a break from music for a year or two and get back together in 1995 to begin recording again. In 1996, preparing to release a two CD set, the band is asked to go on tour with the Lollapalooza festival. Due to have an album out, they leave it at 14 songs and release LOAD. In 1997, after Lollapalooza, they release the "other half" of Load, and call it RELOAD. By now the band and their music have changed very much. In 1998, Metallica released another album of cover songs called GARAGE INCORPERATED It contains 'Garage Days Revisited' and many new covers. In 1999, Metallica decided to make a huge change their music by playing with the San Fransisco symphony. They released an album of the concert played with the symphony called S&M. It has a couple new songs as well as a variety of old songs. It is released on CD, Cassette, and also on VHS tape. In addition, they played a concert with the Saint Lukes symphony which was broadcasted on the internet and radio stations throughout the U.S. In 2001, regretfully, bassest Jason Newstead has decided to leave the band due to personal reasons and Metallica begins to search for a new bassest.
