Our everyday lives consist of hundreds and hundreds of choices, many of which we don't even recognize, or actually involve ourselves in. But in reality, every word and action, that takes place during the course of the day, involves some type of choice on our part, whether we consciously decide to make a choice or not. What we watch on television, what we eat, who we associate with, and where we go or what we do are obvious choices. But how we respond to people and events in our life, what attitudes we adopt, and what we choose to believe as truth, also involve choices that impact the quality of our life and serve to shape our future.
Events over which we have no control also come at us attempting to shape us. People are sometimes cruel, life sometimes seems unfair. But we alone have the ability to decide how those things will influence us. We alone are responsible for what attitudes we adopt, and how we respond to unfair treatment. And we choose whether or not we allow ourselves be slaves to our past.
In the face of unfair or hostile treatment some people will choose bitterness, anger, unforgiveness and hatred, and in turn will live lives consumed with such things, unable to find any happiness at all. Others will use their past as an excuse for how they choose to live the present. They may blame others or circumstances of the past for what they have or who they have become, choosing to live the life of a victim and wallowing in self-pity.
The reality is many people with horrible backgrounds or childhood's will become productive and happy men and women because they recognized one important thing. They recognized their ability to make the choices that control their future. And they have consciously CHOSEN not to allow their past or people that have harmed them to control them any longer.
