Ask not , what your Country can do for you
But what YOU can do for your Country
John F. Kennedy

President Emir Fouad Chehab was known to be extremly silent and quiet, he never responded to his opponents who were constantly attacking him. He believed in constructive work, not talks. He rarely used to give speechs, he rarely used to make statements, but when he did, he used to express in few words what others needed hours to elaborate.

  • His most famous quote : "In Lebanon, there are inhabitants, not citizens"

  • Once asked by Dr. Elias Rababbi to write his memoires like President DeGaulle of France, he refused saying : "If men cannot see what I am doing for Lebanon, do you expect them to Read ?"

  • Once a deputy of Parliament was praising him for his contribution to Lebanon by saying : "You, Mr. President, have prevented a civil war in 1958, you have modernized the Government Institutions, you have built a modern Army.....etc, etc. You have turned Lebanon into a Switzerland of the Middle-East...."
President Chehab interrupted him saying : "Yes, but there's one problem : where do we come up with Swiss Citizens ?"
