1- There are those who believe that Lebanon should maintain close relationships with Syria in order to constitute a united Arabian front against Israel, at least those countries neighboring Israel. Any flaws in such a front would create a weakness in the struggle to remove Israel from South Lebanon and the Syrian Golan Highs. Since Syria is a major influence in the Regional Peace Negotiations with Israel, therefore Lebanon would benefit more in the Peace negotiations ,from a united front alongside the Syrians. The Syrians prefer this Option not only because it would make their position stronger in the Negotiations but also because Syria has never recognized LEBANON as an independent country anyway. There is also the fact that in 1984 President Amin Gemayel signed a peace accord with Israel (known as 17th may Accord) which was later canceled and nulled from the Lebanese side due to Arabian and mainly Syrian pressure. From the Lebanese Government's point of view : their best option was to protect Lebanon from the Israeli Aggressor by signing a treaty with the aggressor, sponsored by the United States. To the Syrians the Lebanese Government was signing a treaty with their deadliest enemy. Thus a Syrian intervention (political & military) was necessary from their part. 2- ... And there are those who believe that Lebanon's sovereignty and Independence should be respected & no influence (whether political or military) is accepted from the Syrians. LEBANON is for LEBANESE....PERIOD. The Israelis prefer this option, not because they like us so much, but because "Divide & Rule" has always been their slogan and as a counter-measure against the Syrians (point # 1). Blaming the Syrians' intervention in Lebanon would divert the attention from THEIR OWN AGGRESSION in South Lebanon, not to mention the fact that they are very happy with the Syrian military presence in Lebanon which is justifying THEIR military presence in Lebanon as well. So at the end of the day, it's like a Football game (soccer) where the players are Syria & Israel, the referee is the U.S., the side referees are the E.U. and the U.N. ...... and guess who's the Ball ????? heheheh You guessed right. Personally, I believe in Both Options combined.....of course without the Ballgame part, i.e. Lebanon should be in a united front with Syria against Israel (the Aggressor), at the same time the respect of Lebanon's sovereignty and independence should be maintained & upheld. This was President Elect Sheikh Bashir Gemayel's opinion during his speech while announcing his candidature for Presidency. The above is the REAL problem of Lebanon, I resent those who characterize Lebanon's Problem as a Religious one. Of course Muslims & Christians have had their differences all over the Globe, not only in Lebanon, but it was never a reason for non-coexistence. Israel, based on its "Divide & Rule" mentality, has been concentrating its intelligence operations towards the delicate religious aspect of Lebanon to divert attention. |
