The Legend: Master Sword:
[The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past] -The Master Sword seen in ALttP was the first of many. Found in the pedestal deep within the Lost Woods of Hyrule, the Master Sword allowed Link to penetrate the evil that had overtaken Hyrule Castle. It also allowed Link to shoot a beam from his blade. It could be upgraded to the Tempered Sword followed by the Golden Sword.
[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening] -It is possible to go through LA and never see this upgrade. The Master Sword is obtained by collecting 20 of the Secret Seashells and returning them to the Seashell Mansion. The sword allows Link to shoot a beam when he has full hearts.
[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time] -The Master Sword seen in OoT (seen in this game) was more like a river of time. Once Link grabbed this mighty sword from the Pedestal of Time within the Temple of Time, he was trapped in the Sacred Realm for 7 long years until he was old enough to become the Hero of Time, which was his destiny. The Master Sword was the only thing that could help Link defeat evil.
[The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons] -The Master Sword in OoA and OoS was merely an upgraded version of Link's Noble Sword (and actually a secret only obtainable through playing both games). The Master Sword was given to Link through password systems. Link can get it from a man below the Clock Shop in Seasons(after learning a password from an Elderly Woman in Labrynna) or from King Zora in Ages(after learning a password from a Zora in Hero's Cave in Holodrum) or from Farore in the Maku Tree (through other passwords). The sword allows you to damage Ganon with a slash rather than having to do Spin Attacks and does more damage overall.
[The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker] -The Master Sword in WW was gained upon entering Hyrule after prooving to the Gods that you are worthy. Lying in a pedestal under Hyrule Castle, the Master Sword has been dormant and locks away Ganon's true power. Upon grabbing the artifact, Link unleashes Ganon's power and is still unable to defeat him. Upon saving the Sages of Wind and Earth, Link is able to truly awaken the Master Sword and return it to its "blade of evil's bane" status.
