Physicals Class
Instructor: Journeywoman Sarilka
Sarilka settles herself behind the podium. "Hello
again, Kanami." she smiles at her mentee, as well
as a few unrecognized faces. She sees Sidney in the back row, and
decides to keep a careful eye out for her. "Which
class?"
Kanami smiles. "Physicals was what
I was told I needed next, Journeywoman Sarilka."
Sarilka ahhs and nods. She removes a mallet, glowtube, and listening
tube from a small drawer under the podium. "Could
you identify these three things, please?"
Kanami smiles. "A mallet, a glowtube,
and a listening tube?" she says.
Sarilka clicks her fingers. "Correct."
she sits down in the front row, facing the class. "When
we begin a physical, we must first ask the patient if they have had any
illnesses or injuries lately."
Kanami nods, following along and watching Sarilka carefully.
Sarilka plays around with the listening tube, remembering the day
she got it. She smiles softly. "Then, if
everything is okay, we need to ask them to undress behind a curtain that
is usually in the corner of the infirmary." she chuckles,
"Make sure they know they can put on a towel-
those infirmaries can get pretty chilly."
Kanami nods.
Sarilka takes the listening tube and twirls it in her hands. "Now,
for this little guy." she puts the ends of the listening
tube into her ears and holds up the metal disk. "/Always/
make sure to warm it. These things are as cold as ::between:: if they've
not been warmed." she eyes the apprentices firmly, "K?"
A few apprentices giggle, and they all nod respectfully.
Sarilka nods. "Good. Now, we first
have to put the listening part here," she puts the disk
above her lungs, "Above the lungs. Listen
for anything that sounds funny. Ideally, everything /should/ run clearly,
no clicks or bumps or anything of the sort."
Kanami nods, imagining a few breath sounds she has heard assisting
more experienced healers as a mental example of what is 'funny'.
Sarilka chuckles softly. "You can
listen on yourself, by the way."
Kanami puts the listening tube above her lungs and takes a deep,
exemplary breath.
Sarilka smiles. "Okay, after you listen
to the lungs, you move the listening tube up, and listen to the breathpipe,
or as the ancients called it, the esophagus. Listen for the same types
of things there." she puts down the listening tube and
picks up her glowtube. "Now, for this."
Kanami nods, and watches the glowtube to see what Sarilka
does first.
Sarilka smiles and nods. "You look,
with the open glowtube, look in the person's eyes, make sure there are
no red splotches and such. Then the ears and nose, and check for blockages
and such." she thinks for a moment, and taps her throat.
"Then, look down the person's throat for
blockages, redness, and anything that looks out of place." she looks
around the room, "Any questions so far?"
Kanami wonders, "What if we do see
blockages in ears, nose or throat, Sarilka?"
Sarilka smiles.. "Remove it."
Kanami says, "I'm sorry, Sarilka.
What if it is like a polyp in the throat, something not easily removed?"
Sarilka grins. "Then you leave it
alone, because it probably won't hurt the person, or get a surgical consult."
Kanami nods. "Sorry to have interrupted,
Journeywoman Sarilka."
Sarilka shakes her head. "No problem
at all."
S'phen quietly strides in from the Healer Center. S'phen
smiles as he walks in then blinks, shaking his head and turning to go without
a word, she wasn't here, he'd comeback .
Sarilka nods, "Now.."
she sees S'phen come in and waves him over. "Come,
sit down."
Kanami smiles at S'phen, not wanting to say anything, but
beams brightly as Sarilka invites him in.
S'phen blinks, looking at Sarilka puzzled but doesn't argue,
yet he still remains silent as he sits.
Fudge chirrups at S'phen
Sarilka continues on with the lesson. "So
after you finish with the glowtube, then we let the patient lay down and
feel his or her stomach. We have to make sure they don't have an infirmary."
Kanami glances at S'phen, suddenly distracted from her lesson
momentarily. She probably won't look back at Sarilka...
S'phen smiles at fudges, recocnizing him as belonging to
the healer he actually looked fore as he listens to Sar teach. apparently
that's what she was doing, teaching.
Kanami shakes her head, turning her attention from the handsome
young brownrider back to her teacher with a sheepish look. "Sorry,
Journeywoman Sarilka."
Sarilka nods. "Its okay."
she continues, "Anyway, after you finish
that, use the listening tube to listen to the diaphragm."
she touches the spot on her belly.
Kanami nods. Though she was half hoping that Sarilka was
going to use S'phen to demonstrate the techniques on.
Not likely, S'phen, was probably the last person Sarilka
wanted to even see in the healerhall, much less demonstrate on.
Sarilka smiles. "Now, have the patient
sit up, and take your mallet. Tap the kneecap, and the knee should twitch.
Do the same for the other knee, and be careful you're not standing in the
way." she grins and finishes. "One
wouldn't want to be kicked, after all?"
Another round of giggles erupts from a group of apprentices, and a few
male apprentices wince meaningfully.
Sarilka giggles softly.
Sarilka smiles. "Now, tell the patient
to recloth. After they're done with that, give them the contraceptive medicine,
if they want it, and tell them to come back in six months!"
she smiles and slips her tools back into her pockets.
Kryss silently slips in
Kanami blinks at Sarilka. "Contraceptive
medicine? Is that standard procedure?"
Sarilka nods to Kanami. "Yes.
For apprentices anyway. All healer apprentices get it. Other people have
a choice, though."
S'phen thinks, and thinks double twice, then decides to remain silent,
out of sight - or in this case of ear - out of mind.
Kryss smiles softly as she thinks she won't have to take that nasty
stuff soon, not that she ever needed it anyways.
Kanami nods at Sarilka. "All
right."
Sarilka smiles and looks around. "Any
more questions?" The group shakes their heads no in unison.
Kanami joins in with the others shaking her head no. No questions
here.
Sarilka grins. "Class dismissed?"
