Notes for CHARLEMAGNE:

CHARLEMAGNE EMPIRE: "Sword & the Cross"

The Holy Roman Empire or The Empire of the Germans was founded by Charles the Great (Charlemagne), whose coronation on Christmas Day 800 gave Papal approval to the unification of France, most of modern Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, and northern Italy under his rule. Although his male line descendants had died out within little more than a century, Charlemagne is the ancestor of every existing Christian European ruling or former ruling dynasty. The only modern survivors of the Empire are the ecclesiastical Princes - the German Archbishops and Bishops - and the Sovereign Princes of Liechtenstein. With the death of Charlemagne no ruler until Napoleon ever held sway over his lands and the Imperial title became the legacy of the Germans.

Charlemagne's Birth & Burial Place: Aachen

A city in western Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia, situated where the three countries of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet. It was the birthplace of Charlemagne and the center of Carolingian culture. Charlemagne made his permanent residence in Aachen and was buried in the cathedral he built there.
The cathedral has since been rebuilt, but the Gramus Tower of the historic City Hall is said to date from the days of Charlemagne.

Notes for FULK V:

THE CRUSADES:

King Fulk V, of the Frankish Army

http://crusades.idbsu.edu/Outremer/15.htm

Fought Zengi, ruler of Mosul, of the Muslim Army, who emerged as power and threat in the early 1130s. He marched on Damascus, causing the Christians great concern, to the extent that Fulk marched to battle him on more than one occasion. One of these occasions almost proved the King's undoing. Zengi's Muslims were defeating Fulk's Franks in the battlefield. King Fulk managed to escape with most of his army into Crusader castle of Montferrand, which then was besieged by the Muslim Army. He sent messengers out to Antioch, Jerusalem and Edessa for help. All areas of the kingdom responded, but not in time. The garrison was running out of supplies, and the walls of the fortress were being battered down by Zengi's siege engines.

Fulk asked for terms, not knowing that help was on its way. Zengi asked only for Montferrand itself. Not only would he let the King and all his men go free, he would also free all the captives currently in his possession. Fulk accepted. He left Montferrand at the end of July, meeting the relieving army on the way to Tripoli.

The King was saved, at the cost of a single fortress. Perhaps more importantly, all the Franks now recognized that Zengi was their most dangerous enemy.

Medieval England

The Forgotten Queen by Haley Elizabeth Garwood is a gutsy tale of a warrior, Empress Matilda, daughter of King Henry I of England and granddaughter of William "the Conqueror". Against the turbulent backdrop of 12th Century England, Matilda had to overcome political intrigues, prejudice, and the lover who stole her crown.

Matilda's destiny sent her down an arduous path. She led the last successful land invasion of England in A.D. 1139 to wrench the throne from Stephen, the lover who betrayed her. Aided by her illegitimate half-brother, Robert of Gloucester and scores of nobility, Empress Matilda gained control of the western half of England.

The story is a fictionalized account of a woman's struggle ... a woman who actually existed and changed history.

Queen of England, daughter of HENRY I. In 1114 she married Holy Roman Emperor HENRY V of Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor. After his death (1126), she married (1128) Geoffrey IV, Duke of Anjou & Maine. Henry I used Matilda as a dynastic pawn to re-established his alliance with the ANGEVIN heir, Geoffrey. Matilda was 26 years old and Geoffrey a mere 14. At her father's (Henry) death (1135) her cousin STEPHEN seized the English throne. In 1139 Matilda and her half brother Robert, earl of Gloucester, challenged Stephen, and she was elected Lady of the English in 1141. Unable to establish her rule, she withdrew her claim in 1148 in favor of her son Henry (later HENRY II).

Many battles were fought with the Saracens on the way to the Holy City, but before Richard could ever reach Jerusalem, he received news that his brother Bad King John I (Nicknamed: Lackland) Plantagenet was creating trouble in England, while King Philip of France began threatening the borders of Normandy. Richard decided to return to England, his ship "Franche-Nef was separated from the main body of the his fleet in a great sea storm.
