Enlisted in Captain Gabriel Requa's militia company and at age 14 (December 17, 1779) was ordered out as a scout to Morrisania under Captain Requa in pursuit of a party of the enemy. They missed the party they were pursuing (not in camp when they arrived) but surprised those there and took six prisoners. They were on their way home and were attacked in Turkyho. William received a wound on the left shoulder from a cutlass and another across his forehead above the left eye. After the war settled in Greenburgh, probably Tarrytown.6
