       ARYAN FATHERLAND      Capitol: Boise, ID

The northern section of Idaho had long been a stronghold of right-wing groups like the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan. A secret plan had been devised to unite the various factions and seize control of the area, using weapons and supplies that had been cached throughout the state. When the bombs fell, all surviving members made their way to Idaho, and within weeks seized control of the state. Soon after the takeover, the purges began. Everyone who was considered to be "inferior" by the regime was systematically rounded up, and placed into camps. Rumors have surfaced that the prisoners are being executed. This is unconfirmed, but given the Nazi's violent history, it cannot be discounted.

       AZTLAN      Capitol: Phoenix, AZ

As the United States fell apart, the government of Mexico invaded the southwestern states, intent on reclaiming the lands lost to the US over the last 150 years. They advanced quickly, catching the US Army by surprise. They received unexpected help from many Americans of Hispanic descent, who felt that they would have a better life under a Latin government. After the invasion, several of the senior officers staged a coup, and seized control. They set about creating their own country, separate from Mexico. Mexico has attempted to regain control of their forces in the US, but all attempts thus far have failed.

                                 BADLANDS

With the collapse of the government, the infrastructure that supported it collapsed as well. Water, or the lack of it, turned the state of Nevada back into a wasteland. Today it is populated by bands of roving marauders, who prey on any one who enters, as well as each other. There are reports of strongholds in Las Vegas and Carson City, but the dangers of this region have kept scouts from being sent in to verify this.

       CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC      Capitol: Sacramento, CA

Despite the loss of San Francisco and Los Angeles, California survived WWIII better than many areas. The rich San Joaquin and San Fernando valleys allowed the population to eat fairly well by modern standards. This had desperate refugees streaming into the area, hoping for a better life. With available supplies dwindling rapidly, the military and civilian leadership shut down the borders. All California citizens were issued ID cards, and any one caught without one risked immediate exile. The border guards have standing orders to shoot on sight anyone attempting to cross the borders illegally. California is now an effective police state.

       CANADIAN PROTECTORATE     Capitol: Milwaukee, WI

Canada had been relatively untouched during WWIII, but the after effects did considerable damage. For years, scientists had predicted that hundreds of warheads would throw millions of tons of dust into the upper atmosphere, bringing on a Nuclear Winter. Record snowfalls blanketed Canada, and it soon became apparent the glaciers to the north were moving south faster than anyone predicted. The Canadian government issued a statement that they were sending their forces into the United States to "help their ally to the south rebuild". However, since there has been a massive repopulation program in effect for several years, no one believes that the Canadians are going home anytime soon.

CONFEDERATION OF FREE STATES   Capitol: Dodge City, KS

Technically, the Confederation is not a nation at all, but a loose alliance of dozens (perhaps hundreds) of small survivalist organizations. "Every man is a nation unto himself" is their only law. Although each group has it's own leaders and agenda, they are capable of cooperation for mutual survival. Several of their bordering neighbors have attempted to expand into their territory, but  all have failed. The citizens of the Confederation have become expert guerrilla fighters, sending all their attackers packing with heavy casualties. Several of the groups have attempted to take over the alliance by force, but all have been either wiped out or have fled to the Aryan Fatherland.

                                 DEAD ZONE'S ALPHA AND BRAVO

These two areas were hit with multiple warheads, leaving them with high levels of radiation and radically altered weather patterns. Severe storms carrying residual fallout still circulate throughout these areas, making them extremely hazardous. There are reports that there are some survivors still living in the Dead Zone's, but these are unconfirmed.

DESERET     Capitol: Salt Lake City, UT

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints (The Mormons) were better prepared than most for life after WWIII. All church members were required to keep a years supply of food on hand. The Church organized quickly, and began setting up a local militia and food distribution centers. Most of the elected officials in Utah were church members, and slowly the state government was replaced by the church elders. Deseret has become a theocracy, with a strict set of rules based on the Book of Mormon. Alcohol and tobacco are forbidden, but polygamy is making a comeback. Outsiders are welcome, but only if they adhere to the religious laws that govern the area. They have a strong militia, but this far have shown no interest in expanding their territory.

        DIXIE      Capitol: Little Rock, AR

Since the end of the Civil War, the saying "The South shall rise again" had a strong appeal with many people. After the bombs fell, several of the southern states began organizing a new nation, based on the values of the old South. This move was viewed with great suspicion by the areas African-American citizens, given the region's past history. The new government insisted that all persons living in the area would be treated equally, but it wasn't long before "Whites Only" signs began appearing. The black residents rallied against the new regime, vowing never again to be treated as second-class citizens. Riots ensued, becoming a new civil war. The old South split in two, whites to the west in Dixie, and blacks to the east in Ngome Uhuru (see below).

        FLORIDA LIBERTAD     Capitol: Miami, FL

The Spanish-speaking survivors of Florida banded together after the bombs fell. They have been able to maintain many of the infrastructures in the area, even though they are a resource-poor nation state. The terrain has allowed them to keep potential invaders out thus far. They have an alliance with the nation of Aztlan which is more in name than in deed. The English speaking survivors of the region have not suffered at the hands of the Hispanic leadership, and although there is some mistrust between the two groups, there have been no incidents of violence.

KINGDOM OF NEW YORK     Capitol: Albany, NY

The governor of New York, William "Wild Bill" Robertson, although a bit eccentric, was extremely popular with voters. He was serving his third term in office when the bombs fell. He managed to convince the governors of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont to pool their resources, and through a great deal of hard work, managed to save most of the prewar population. The strain has taken it's toll, however. Governor Robertson started to appear in public with a robe and crown, calling himself "King William I of New York". At first, people thought it was just the latest in his many eccentricities, but they soon found out differently. The first protests were crushed swiftly, and soon after the military forces of New York invaded Pennsylvania, hoping to secure the coal fields and heavy industry of the area. There is an active resistance movement, but "King William" appears to be firmly in power for the moment.

      NEW SPARTA      Capitol: Charlotte, NC

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Alexander Heisen had been on an inspection tour when war broke out, and survived the bombing of Washington DC. He gathered together the surviving military units in the Southern states. His original intention was to secure an area, and wait for the new Commander in Chief to issue orders. It became increasingly apparent, however, that there would be no new C in C. He soon decided to take personal control of the area, and begin the process of rebuilding America himself, by force. His forces soon started invading the surrounding areas, rapidly expanding their holdings. Gen Heisen's version of America is radically different the original. There is little freedom, and mandatory conscription of all citizens over the age of 16. New Sparta has possibly the largest surviving forces in America, and Gen. Heisen has proven to be a very capable, although dangerous, leader.

      NGOME UHURU     Capitol: Macon, GA

As the nation state of Dixie became more organized, it soon became apparent that despite all their public statements, they were at the very least turning a blind eye to the rising tide of racism in the region, if not actively supporting it. The African-American populace refused to take this lying down, and fought back. Their biggest supporter was The Nation of Islam. As they were well organized, they were able to create an effective fighting force, eventually carving out a portion of the state of Georgia as their new homeland. Ngome Uhuru (Swahili for "Fortress of Freedom") is virtually an all black society. Given their past history, they are extremely distrustful of outsiders, and have closed their borders.

NOVYA RUSSKA SSR     Capitol: Olympia, WA

As the war dragged on, and the glaciers swept south, the Soviet Union was caught in a vice. Europe had become a radioactive ruin, and Asia was being decimated by the virulent Chinese flu. The Soviet government decided that they had only on course of action left to them, to take their remaining forces, and move them to a new region. And the only path was across the Bering Strait, into America. They stripped Russia of anything available, and invaded Alaska. But Alaska and Canada were suffering from the same glacier movement that Russia was leaving behind. They fought their way south, and eventually successfully took over the state of Washington, suffering huge losses. The forces that have survived are battle hardened veterans, and are firmly entrenched. The former citizens of Washington that did not flee the area have become a slave labor pool that the Soviets are keeping firmly under control.

      OREGON TERRITORY     Capitol: Salem, OR

Although the largest city in Oregon, Portland, had been leveled by a nuclear blast, the rest of the state was untouched. With it's small population, and abundant resources, the survivors had a fairly good quality of life. They slowly started to rebuild, until the Soviet invasion. Thousands of refugees streamed across the border. The Commander of the Oregon National Guard, MG John Bradley, marshalled the forces he had available to him, and marched north. He gathered together the fleeing military forces and made a stand. The Battle of Centralia, as it came to be called, temporarily halted the Soviet advance, and bought enough time to round up many of the remaining US forces in the area, fighting a delaying action all the way back to the Columbia River that separated Oregon and Washington. Engineers hurriedly destroyed the bridges that crossed the Columbia, except one. As they crossed the bridge at Cascade Locks, known locally as the Bridge of the Gods, the Oregon forces blew up the bridge in the faces of the Soviet Army. Since then, Oregon has managed to hold off the Russians by sheer grit and determination. Everyone in the Oregon Territory is either in the military, or directly support it.
