PV2 Angelica Concepcion Brijalba
![]() Angelica was born 9 February, 1993 in Nogales, Arizona; the first of her family to be born in the United States. Her parents, Jose Felipe and Maria Esmerelda, were and remain migrant farm workers and ranch hands who followed the trail of planting and reaping, birthing and slaughter, up and down the length of America. Like millions of other illegal aliens, they shunned contact with the authorities, kept their heads down, and worked hard to survive. Angelica, as a result of the constant movement, rarely attended school for any significant stretch of time and never graduated. Her education was a more practical one; how to ride fence, how to hoe weeds from between the wheat, how to find lost lambs and keep the sheep together, and always how to find the things the gringos threw away, or wouldn't miss if they disappeared.
Life was hard, but not so bad really. The Brijalbas were a happy family, good Catholics, and knew their place in the world. Sure, the gringos sometimes flexed their muscles, but no one ever got really hurt. Easier to leave town and find another work camp than make a scene. There was always food to eat, the constant duty and comfort of the Church, and even sometimes enough extra to go to town to see a movie dressed in her best threadbare clothes.
And then the Reds turned that world upside down.
Ironically the Brijalbas were in Moscow - Moscow, Idaho that is- when the bombs fell. Equally ironic it wasn't the hellish death of rad-sickness or famine that threatened the family with death, but the gringos who called themselves the Aryan Fatherland. Like the Nazi's they worshipped, jack-booted thugs descended upon anyone of impure blood. Thousands were killed, more rounded up to be taken away to the camps. The Brijalbas, not wanting to end up like other Mexican-Americans, fled into the arid Badlands. The lack of water and food forced them back north and west, headed like the Okies so many years before to the golden promise of California. Along the way the fallout cloud from the destruction of Fairchild AFB passed over them for several days. Radiation particles sleeted through their bodies like so many invisible demons; tearing at cells and organs and making them violently ill. Angelica received an extremely high dose of radiation and only time will tell what the long-term effects on her body will be.
They never made it to California, but Oregon Territory swallowed up the Brijalbas along with thousands of other refugees. The California Republic would have turned them away, so Oregon Territory became, and remains, home. The people of the Oregon Territory gave aid, food, and shelter to the Brijalbas, as they did for so many others. Their kindness allowed the small family to recover and survive, and Angelica feels a deep sense of debt to her new homeland for this.
Angelica joined the Army as soon as she could, determined to make sure that the Idaho Nazis would never again threaten her family, or her people, with their sick vision of humanity. She hates them with a special intensity that not even the Soviets can bring forth.
After PVT Brijalba enlisted, she was sent to Camp Rilea for Basic Training. Though lacking a formal education, and having extreme difficulty reading, she wasn't stupid and managed to master the skills the Army beat into her head. After graduation, she was assigned to the field hospital at Camp Clark for Medic Training as part of the 62nd Medical Group Detatchment. Training was "On the Job", PVT Brijalba was soon immersed in shrapnel wounds, amputations, and burn trauma; not to mention the constant shelling from the Soviets camped across the river.
PVT Brijalba is short (1.52m/5'00"), the result of poor nutrition growing up, but is by no means frail. She has dark black hair, black eyes, and dusky skin. She keeps her hair cropped short and loose. Like many medics have chosen to do since the civilized rules of warfare went the way of the dodo, she carries a 9mm Beretta as her personal weapon. She still sports the Red Cross on her helmet and the right arm of her blouse though, figuring that if the enemy sees it they might not make her an immediate or high priority target; unlike those fellows carrying M-16's, grenade launchers and light machine guns.
