Terminology
Abortion: The spontaneous or induced termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.
Embryo: a living thing in its earliest stages of development
Fetus: an unborn or unhatched vertebrate especially after its basic structure is laid down: especially a developing human being in the uterus from usually three months after pregnancy occurs to birth. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
The above terminology, found in The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 1997, shows the faults in the basic arguments of of the pro-choice wing today. They argue that a child is not a human being until birth. History, through its discoveries and basic inherent knowledge, knows that even in the womb, that child is still a human being. The very definition of embryo itself says living thing. Fetus says human being. Doesn't inherent good, knowledge of good and evil, tell us that the killing of any human being, especially one that is completely innocent, is wrong? Today's culture has gotten away from reasoning by right and wrong, and merely says: "If it feels good, do it." This is the culture of death that I am ashamed to live in, and I vow to do all that I can to dedicate my life to saving the lives of the babies that I love so much, and that God has a great plan for. I hope to be able to provide information to back up my beliefs, for the religious from God, and the non-faithful, pure reason and intellect. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
Medical scientists over the years have researched the unique world of the pre-term baby. After years of research, Lennart Nillson perfected the art of intrauterine photography. Nillson's photographs, seen for the first time in the April 1965 issue of Life Magazine, give us a picture into the once quiet and mysterious world of the unborn.
What Nillson found was a baby that slept, reacted to touch and pain, sucked its thumb, and had human features including toes and fingers. Further scientific discoveries have made it possible to detect the unborn child's heartbeat at eighteen days after conception.
Since Nillson's photography first appeared, medical scientists have developed medical break-throughs in treating babies before they are born. A whole new science of fetology has developed. The pre-term baby has become a special patient.
The unborn child is disturbed by sound, light, touch, and responds to these disturbances by moving. Unborn children frequently suck their thumb and even get hiccups. Pediatrician H.B. Valman, M.D., and Gynecologist J.F. Pearson, M.D., report in the British Medical Journal that the inner ear of the fetus is completely developed by mid-pregnancy and responds to a variety of sounds like a slamming door.
Despite these medical facts, pro-abortion advocates continue to argue that abortion is an easy answer to over-population, rising welfare costs, birth defects, and teenage pregnancy. Their unscientific slogans that an unborn child is a "glob of cells" are frequently accepted by people who do not know the facts.
In 1974, Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson, M.D., a former director of the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health, the largest abortion clinic in the world, shocked the medical profession. Nathanson wrote an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the nation's leading medical periodical, in which he stated, "I am deeply troubled by my own increasing certainty that I had in fact presided over 60,000 deaths...There is no longer serious doubt in my mind that human life exists within the womb from the very onset of pregnancy..."
Nathanson says that his change of attitude on abortion comes from new scientific knowledge about the fetus, not religious or social convictions. "I became convinced we are dealing with someone (unborn baby) who is a member of the human community." People have got to realize that science has progressed to the point that we recognize the rights of these members of the human community.
