Canada is a very large country with an area of 10 million
square kilometers covering many different geographical areas or regions.
The 5 regions of Canada are the Atlantic Region, Central Canada, the Prairie
Provinces, the West Coast, and the North. Canada is bordered
by three oceans - the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean
on the east, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. The south of Canada is
bordered by the United States.
About 29 million people live in our country. Most
Canadians live in the southern parts of Canada. The only people who
are originally from Canada are the Aboriginal peoples. Aboriginal
peoples lived in Canada for thousands of years before the first immigrants
came here. Throughout Canada's history, millions of immigrants have
come to our country. Today, Canada welcomes people from over 150
countries each year. Presently, about 250,000 people per year are
granted citizenship into our country.
Canada has 10 provinces and 2 territories which are all
listed below. For a brief overview, visit our provinces and territories
by clicking on the map above or by clicking on one of the links listed
below.
Today, our country has two official languages - English
and French. However, as Canadians, we are proud that many different
cultural and ethnic groups live here and we consider ourselves as being
a "Multicultural" country.
There are three levels of government in Canada: federal,
provincial/territorial, and municipal (or local). In general, the
federal government takes care of things that affect Canada on a national
level; such as national defense, citizenship, and foreign affairs policies.
Provincial and territorial governments take care of such things as health
care, highways, and education. Sometimes they share responsibilities
with the federal govenrment in some areas. Municipal government is
responsible is responsilble for thisngs such as public works, fire departments,
and local or regional police departments.
