Who is the Author of the Book of Mormon?

Critics of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often claim that the book of
Mormon is from the devil because it supposedly teaches doctrines different than those
found in the Bible. Interestingly, our Lord Jesus Christ was likewise accused of being a
devil by the leading religious authorities of His day. Just like the religious leaders of
today, they said He was teaching something different than what the law of Moses
taught. During one such incident, "he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And
it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But
some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And
others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts,
said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house
divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his
kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub" (Luke
11:14-18).
We can use this very principle which Jesus Christ Himself gave us to determine if the Book
of Mormon is a product of the devil or not. If it is from the devil then its' teachings
should be in opposition to the teachings of the Savior, otherwise the devil himself is
preaching of Christ and is a house divided against itself. And if that is the case, how
can the devil accomplish his goal?
To better understand how the devil works we first need to understand what his goal is. In
Luke 8:12 we read, "Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil,
and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved."
This verse is very interesting because it shows that the main purpose of the devil which
is to take "away the word out of their hearts lest they should believe and be
saved".
In John 8:44-49 we further read, "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of
your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he
is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are
not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a
Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father,
and ye do dishonour me."
In Revelations 12:9,17 we're told "And the great dragon was cast out, that old
serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which DECEIVETH the whole world: he was cast out
into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And the dragon was wroth with the
woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of
God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" (emphasis added).
Jesus taught "By their fruits ye shall know them, a good tree cannot bring forth bad
fruit." Nor can a bad tree bring forth good fruit. Now that we are aware of what
Satan's goals are, how he operates, and how to detect him, let's compare the doctrines,
principles, teachings, and covenants found in the Book of Mormon with those contained in
the Bible and see if they are in harmony with the teachings of Christ. If we find that
these two books are in perfect unison with one another, it will be extremely hard to
maintain the allegation that God is the author of one while the devil is the author of the
other.
Let's start at the very beginning of the Book of Mormon. Speaking of a prophet named Lehi,
in 1 Nephi 1:7-10 we read, "And it came to pass that he returned to his own house at
Jerusalem; and he cast himself upon his bed, being overcome with the Spirit and the things
which he had seen. And being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away in a
vision, even that he saw the heavens open, and he thought he saw God sitting upon his
throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and
praising their God. And it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of
heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day. And he also
saw twelve others following him, and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the
firmament."
Right from the beginning, the Book of Mormon talks about Christ and the twelve apostles.
To fully appreciate this fact, we need to read 1 Nephi 11:2-3,10-11, 15-33 where the son
of Lehi was shown this same vision. In it we read, "And the Spirit said unto
me: Behold, what desirest thou? And I said: I desire to behold the things which my father
saw. And he said unto me: What desirest thou? And I said unto him: To know the
interpretation thereof--for I spake unto him as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was
in the form of a man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit of the Lord; and he
spake unto me as a man speaketh with another. And I said unto him: A virgin, most
beautiful and fair above all other virgins. And he said unto me: Knowest thou the
condescension of God? And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children;
nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things. And he said unto me: Behold, the
virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh. And
it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had
been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying:
Look! And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms. And the angel
said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! Knowest
thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw? And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is
the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men;
wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things. And he spake unto me, saying: Yea,
and the most joyous to the soul. And after he had said these words, he said unto me: Look!
And I looked, and I beheld the Son of God going forth among the children of men; and I saw
many fall down at his feet and worship him.
"And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen,
was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life;
which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of
life was a representation of the love of God. And the angel said unto me again: Look and
behold the condescension of God! And I looked and beheld the Redeemer of the world, of
whom my father had spoken; and I also beheld the prophet who should prepare the way before
him. And the Lamb of God went forth and was baptized of him; and after he was baptized, I
beheld the heavens open, and the Holy Ghost come down out of heaven and abide upon him in
the form of a dove. And I beheld that he went forth ministering unto the people, in power
and great glory; and the multitudes were gathered together to hear him; and I beheld that
they cast him out from among them. And I also beheld twelve others following him. And it
came to pass that they were carried away in the Spirit from before my face, and I saw them
not. And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked,
and I beheld the heavens open again, and I saw angels descending upon the children of men;
and they did minister unto them. And he spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked,
and I beheld the Lamb of God going forth among the children of men. And I beheld
multitudes of people who were sick, and who were afflicted with all manner of diseases,
and with devils and unclean spirits; and the angel spake and showed all these things unto
me. And they were healed by the power of the Lamb of God; and the devils and the unclean
spirits were cast out. And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying:
Look! And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the
Son of the everlasting God was judged of the world; and I saw and bear record. And I,
Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world."
In these verses we are given one of the most powerful testimonies of the Savior and his
mission. But how can this be if the devil is the author of the Book of Mormon? If the
devil is behind the inspiration of this work, why is he reinforcing the same teachings we
find in Colossians 3:17 which says, "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him," and in Acts
4:12 which tells us, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none
other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."?
But the Book of Mormon doesn't stop with the words of Nephi concering the testimony
Christ. In Helaman 5:12 we read, "And now, my sons, remember, remember that it
is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your
foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the
whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have
no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the
rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men
build they cannot fall." Here is a clear explanation of how to protect ourselves
against the power of the devil. But how can this be if the devil is the author of the Book
of Mormon?
In Mosiah 4:9-10 we're told, "Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created
all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power,
both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the
Lord can comprehend. And again, believe that ye must repent of your sins and forsake them,
and humble yourselves before God; and ask in sincerity of heart that he would forgive you;
and now, if you believe all these things see that ye do them."
In 2 Nephi 25:26 we read, "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of
Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children
may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
The Bible tells us in 1 John 2:22-23, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus
is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth
the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father
also."
There is no doubt that Satan is the chief antichrist because he, above all other beings,
steadfastly denies the Lordship of Christ and teaches everyone to do the same. Yet over
and over again, throughout the entire Book of Mormon, it teaches people to look toward
Christ as their redeemer. How, then, can the critics of the Book of Mormon expect us to
believe them when they say that the devil is the inspiration of that book?
In 1 Nephi 22:26,30 we read "And because of the righteousness of his people, Satan
has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no
power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of
Israel reigneth. Therefore, my brethren, I would that ye should consider that the things
which have been written upon the plates of brass are true; and they testify that a man
must be obedient to the commandments of God."
We must remember it was Jesus who said that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
And he made this remark after the religious leaders of His day accused Him of being a
devil Himself, on the grounds that he was casting out devils. In the book of Mormon
we are taught how to cast Satan and his devils out of our life, and place our faith and
trust in Jesus Christ. Yet the religious leaders of our day claim such words are inspired
of the devil. To believe what these religious leaders say we would then have to disregard
the holy words of God as found in the Bible.
In John 3:3-5 "Jesus answered and said unto him, [Nicodemus] Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith
unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his
mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
In Matthew 3:13-15 we read "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John,
to be baptized of him. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee,
and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus
it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him."
In Acts 2:37-39 we read of where Peter was preaching the gospel, "Now when they [the
people] heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said unto Peter and the rest of
the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them , Repent and
be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your
sins."
To summarize these three scriptures, we first learned that in order for a person to
inherit the kingdom of God, they must be born of the water and the spirit. But what does
that means? In subsequent scriptures we see that means being baptized. Even Jesus Himself
submitted to being baptized.
Does the Book of Mormon teach this same doctrine? In 2 Nephi 9:23 we read, "And he
commandeth all men that they must repent, and be baptized in his name, having perfect
faith in the Holy One of Israel, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God."
But the Book of Mormon gives us greater understanding of this doctrine than the Bible
does. In 2 Nephi 31:5-10 we read, "And now, if the Lamb of God, he being holy, should
have need to be baptized by water, to fulfill all righteousness, O then, how much more
need have we, being unholy, to be baptized, yea, even by water! And now, I would ask of
you, my beloved brethren, wherein the Lamb of God did fulfill all righteousness in being
baptized by water? Know ye not that he was holy? But notwithstanding he being holy, he
showeth unto the children of men that, according to the flesh he humbleth himself before
the Father, and witnesseth unto the Father that he would be obedient unto him in keeping
his commandments. Wherefore, after he was baptized with water the Holy Ghost descended
upon him in the form of a dove. And again, it showeth unto the children of men the
straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the gate, by which they should enter, he
having set the example before them. And he said unto the children of men: Follow thou me.
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the
commandments of the Father?"
In Moroni 8:8-20 we are further told, "Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer,
your Lord and your God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the righteous but
sinners to repentance; the whole need no physician, but they that are sick; wherefore,
little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore the curse
of Adam is taken from them in me, that it hath no power over them; and the law of
circumcision is done away in me. And after this manner did the Holy Ghost manifest the
word of God unto me; wherefore, my beloved son, I know that it is solemn mockery before
God, that ye should baptize little children. Behold I say unto you that this thing shall
ye teach--repentance and baptism unto those who are accountable and capable of committing
sin; yea, teach parents that they must repent and be baptized, and humble themselves as
their little children, and they shall all be saved with their little children. And their
little children need no repentance, neither baptism. Behold, baptism is unto repentance to
the fulfilling the commandments unto the remission of sins. But little children are alive
in Christ, even from the foundation of the world; if not so, God is a partial God, and
also a changeable God, and a respecter to persons; for how many little children have died
without baptism! Wherefore, if little children could not be saved without baptism, these
must have gone to an endless hell. Behold I say unto you, that he that supposeth that
little children need baptism is in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity,
for he hath neither faith, hope, nor charity; wherefore, should he be cut off while in the
thought, he must go down to hell. For awful is the wickedness to suppose that God saveth
one child because of baptism, and the other must perish because he hath no baptism. Wo be
unto them that shall pervert the ways of the Lord after this manner, for they shall perish
except they repent. Behold, I speak with boldness, having authority from God; and I fear
not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear. And I am filled with charity,
which is everlasting love; wherefore, all children are alike unto me; wherefore, I love
little children with a perfect love; and they are all alike and partakers of salvation.
For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is
unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity. Little children cannot repent; wherefore,
it is awful wickedness to deny the pure mercies of God unto them, for they are all alive
in him because of his mercy. And he that saith that little children need baptism denieth
the mercies of Christ, and setteth at naught the atonement of him and the power of his
redemption."
Here the Book of Mormon not only explains the need for baptism, but it also show how
the power of the Atonement applies to it.
The Bible teaches us the need to have "faith, hope and charity." The Bible
explains why we need to have faith by saying, "without faith it is impossible to
please God. But why do we also need to have "hope and charity"? In Moroni
7:36-48 the Book of Mormon explains, "have angels ceased to appear unto the children
of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as
time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof
to be saved? Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and
it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have
ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain. For
no man can be saved, according to the words of Christ, save they shall have faith in his
name; wherefore, if these things have ceased, then has faith ceased also; and awful is the
state of man, for they are as though there had been no redemption made. But behold, my
beloved brethren, I judge better things of you, for I judge that ye have faith in Christ
because of your meekness; for if ye have not faith in him then ye are not fit to be
numbered among the people of his church. And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak
unto you concerning hope. How is it that ye can attain unto faith, save ye shall have
hope? And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope
through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life
eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise. Wherefore, if a
man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope And
again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek,
and lowly of heart. If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God,
save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses
by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for
if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity. And charity
suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own,
is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in
the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all
things. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for
charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for
all things must fail-- But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever;
and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him. Wherefore,
my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be
filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son,
Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be
like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be
purified even as he is pure. Amen."
Notice especially the last 2 verses which exhort us to "pray unto the Father with all
the energy of [your] heart." If Satan was the author of the Book of Mormon, why would
he encourage people to pray to our Father in heaven, just as Jesus taught His disciples to
do? Satan teaches doctrines that go against what Christ taught. To believe that the Book
of Mormon is of the devil, we would also have to believe that he encourages people to do
the very things which Christ tells us to do.
But this is not the only place where the Book of Mormon pleads with us to pray unto God.
In Alma 34:18-28 we're told, "Yea, cry unto him for mercy; for he is mighty to save.
Yea, humble yourselves, and continue in prayer unto him. Cry unto him when ye are in your
fields, yea, over all your flocks. Cry unto him in your houses, yea, over all your
household, both morning, mid-day, and evening. Yea, cry unto him against the power of your
enemies. Yea, cry unto him against the devil, who is an enemy to all righteousness. Cry
unto him over the crops of your fields, that ye may prosper in them. Cry over the flocks
of your fields, that they may increase. But this is not all; ye must pour out your souls
in your closets, and your secret places, and in your wilderness. Yea, and when you do not
cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually
for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you. And now behold, my
beloved brethren, I say unto you, do not suppose that this is all; for after ye have done
all these things, if ye turn away the needy, and the naked, and visit not the sick and
afflicted, and impart of your substance, if ye have, to those who stand in need--I say
unto you, if ye do not any of these things, behold, your prayer is vain, and availeth you
nothing, and ye are as hypocrites who do deny the faith."
And in 3 Nephi 18:15,18 it tells us, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch
and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him.
Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into
temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat."
There are hundreds of different Christian denominations in the world today. Each one has
their own unique name. But what should the name of Christ's church be? In 3 Nephi 27:3-9
we read of Christ's appearance to the people of the Book of Mormon where, "they said
unto him: Lord, we will that thou wouldst tell us the name whereby we shall call this
church; for there are disputations among the people concerning this matter. And the Lord
said unto them: Verily, verily, I say unto you, why is it that the people should murmur
and dispute because of this thing? Have they not read the scriptures, which say ye must
take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name? For by this name shall ye be called at
the last day; And whoso taketh upon him my name, and endureth to the end, the same shall
be saved at the last day. Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name;
therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my
name that he will bless the church for my sake. And how be it my church save it be called
in my name? For if a church be called in Moses' name then it be Moses' church; or if it be
called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name
then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel. Verily I say unto
you, that ye are built upon my gospel; therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do
call, in my name; therefore if ye call upon the Father, for the church, if it be in my
name the Father will hear you."
This is in perfect harmony with the teachings of the Bible which teaches us to do
everything in the holy name of Jesus Christ.
What about "The Atonement". The Atonement is the key to the salvation of
mankind. Closely associated with the atonement is the resurrection. As Paul stated in 1
Corinthians 2:2 "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ,
and him crucified."
Does the Book of Mormon teach about the atonement? The answer is a resounding
"yes." It is the main theme of the Book of Mormon, and is found throughout its
pages. For example, in 2 Nephi 9:7-13 it tells us, "Wherefore, it must needs be an
infinite atonement--save it should be an infinite atonement this corruption could not put
on incorruption. Wherefore, the first judgment which came upon man must needs have
remained to an endless duration. And if so, this flesh must have laid down to rot and to
crumble to its mother earth, to rise no more. O the wisdom of God, his mercy and grace!
For behold, if the flesh should rise no more our spirits must become subject to that angel
who fell from before the presence of the Eternal God, and became the devil, to rise no
more. And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a
devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies,
in misery, like unto himself; yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents, who
transformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light, and stirreth up the children of men unto
secret combinations of murder and all manner of secret works of darkness. O how great the
goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape from the grasp of this awful
monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also
the death of the spirit. And because of the way of deliverance of our God, the Holy One of
Israel, this death, of which I have spoken, which is the temporal, shall deliver up its
dead; which death is the grave. And this death of which I have spoken, which is the
spiritual death, shall deliver up its dead; which spiritual death is hell; wherefore,
death and hell must deliver up their dead, and hell must deliver up its captive spirits,
and the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and the bodies and the spirits of men
will be restored one to the other; and it is by the power of the resurrection of the Holy
One of Israel. O how great the plan of our God! For on the other hand, the paradise of God
must deliver up the spirits of the righteous, and the grave deliver up the body of the
righteous; and the spirit and the body is restored to itself again, and all men become
incorruptible, and immortal, and they are living souls, having a perfect knowledge like
unto us in the flesh, save it be that our knowledge shall be perfect."
In Mosiah 4:2,6-8 we learn, "And they had viewed themselves in their own carnal
state, even less than the dust of the earth. And they all cried aloud with one voice,
saying: O have mercy, and apply the atoning blood of Christ that we may receive
forgiveness of our sins, and our hearts may be purified; for we believe in Jesus Christ,
the Son of God, who created heaven and earth, and all things; who shall come down among
the children of men. I say unto you, if ye have come to a knowledge of the goodness of
God, and his matchless power, and his wisdom, and his patience, and his long-suffering
towards the children of men; and also, the atonement which has been prepared from the
foundation of the world, that thereby salvation might come to him that should put his
trust in the Lord, and should be diligent in keeping his commandments, and continue in the
faith even unto the end of his life, I mean the life of the mortal body."
In Mosiah 4:7,8 it again tells us, "I say, that this is the man who receiveth
salvation, through the atonement which was prepared from the foundation of the world for
all mankind, which ever were since the fall of Adam, or who are, or who ever shall be,
even unto the end of the world. And this is the means whereby salvation cometh. And there
is none other salvation save this which hath been spoken of; neither are there any
conditions whereby man can be saved except the conditions which I have told you."
Alma 21:9 states, "Now Aaron began to open the scriptures unto them concerning the
coming of Christ, and also concerning the resurrection of the dead, and that there could
be no redemption for mankind save it were through the death and sufferings of Christ, and
the atonement of his blood."
In Alma 33:22 we read, "If so, wo shall come upon you; but if not so, then cast about
your eyes and begin to believe in the Son of God, that he will come to redeem his people,
and that he shall suffer and die to atone for their sins; and that he shall rise again
from the dead, which shall bring to pass the resurrection, that all men shall stand before
him, to be judged at the last and judgment day, according to their works."
Alma 34:9 explains, "For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for
according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else
all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are
lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be
made."
If the Book of Mormon was inspired by Satan, why would he teach us so often about the
great importance of Christ's atonement? The answer is, he wouldn't. Therefore, he cannot
be the inspiration behind the Book of Mormon.
In 1 Nephi 10:12 we read, "Yea, even my father spake much concerning the Gentiles,
and also concerning the house of Israel, that they should be compared like unto an
olive-tree, whose branches should be broken off and should be scattered upon all the face
of the earth.
This is in harmony with what Paul wrote in Romans 11:16-25 "For if the firstfruit be
holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. And if some of
the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them,
and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Boast not against the
branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say
then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief
they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God
spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore
the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness,
if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. And they also, if
they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in
again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert
graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the
natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? For I would not, brethren, that ye
should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that
blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come
in."
1 Nephi 13:39-40 we are told, "And after it [the Book of Mormon] had come forth unto
them I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles
unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren,
and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, that the records of
the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true. And the angel spake unto me,
saying: These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the
truth of the first, which are of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, and shall make known the
plain and precious things which have been taken away from them; and shall make known to
all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father,
and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or they cannot be
saved."
1 Nephi 14:20-23 "And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles
of the Lamb. Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also
many things which have been. And he shall also write concerning the end of the world.
Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written
in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they
proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth
of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy
to the understanding of all men." Here we have the testimony that Revelation is true.
2 Nephi 1:8 "And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from
the knowledge of other nations; for behold, many nations would overrun the land, that
there would be no place for an inheritance."
Compare this to Revelation 12:14 which tells us, "And to the woman were given two
wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she
is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."
Going on, in 2 Nephi 25:18 we're told, "Wherefore, he shall bring forth his words
unto them, which words shall judge them at the last day, for they shall be given them for
the purpose of convincing them of the true Messiah, who was rejected by them; and unto the
convincing of them that they need not look forward any more for a Messiah to come, for
there should not any come, save it should be a false Messiah which should deceive the
people; for there is save one Messiah spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he
who should be rejected of the Jews."
Revelation 20:12 tells us that we shall be judged "out of those things which were
written in the books, according to their works." So again we see that the Bible and
the Book of Mormon are in full harmony with one another.
In 2 Thessalonians 2:11 we learn, "But behold, the Jews were a stiffnecked people;
and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things
that they could not understand. Wherefore, because of their blindness, which blindness
came by looking beyond the mark, they must needs fall; for God hath taken away his
plainness from them, and delivered unto them many things which they cannot understand,
because they desired it. And because they desired it God hath done it, that they may
stumble."
This same message is echoed in Jacob 4:15 "And now I, Jacob, am led on by the Spirit
unto prophesying; for I perceive by the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that by the
stumbling of the Jews they will reject the stone upon which they might build and have safe
foundation."
3 Nephi 11:7-15,28-36 reaffirm the sermon on the mount (The constitution of the Gospel).
If the Book of Mormon is inspired of the devil, why would Satan place this beautiful
sermon in his book?
In Mormon 9:7-15,27-29 we read, "And again I speak unto you who deny the revelations
of God, and say that they are done away, that there are no revelations, nor prophecies,
nor gifts, nor healing, nor speaking with tongues, and the interpretation of tongues;
Behold I say unto you, he that denieth these things knoweth not the gospel of Christ; yea,
he has not read the scriptures; if so, he does not understand them. For do we not read
that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness
neither shadow of changing? And now if ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth
vary, and in whom there is shadow of changing, then have ye imagined up unto yourselves a
god who is not God of miracles.But behold, I will show unto you a God of miracles, even
the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and it is that same God
who created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. Behold he created
Adam, and by Adam came the fall of man. And because of the fall of man came Jesus Christ,
even the Father and the Son; and because of Jesus Christ came the redemption of man. And
because of the redemption of man, which came by Jesus Christ, they are brought back into
the presence of the Lord; yea, this is wherein all men are redeemed, because the death of
Christ bringeth to pass the resurrection, which bringeth to pass a redemption from an
endless sleep, from which sleep all men shall be awakened by the power of God when the
trump shall sound; and they shall come forth, both small and great, and all shall stand
before his bar, being redeemed and loosed from this eternal band of death, which death is
a temporal death. And then cometh the judgment of the Holy One upon them; and then cometh
the time that he that is filthy shall be filthy still; and he that is righteous shall be
righteous still; he that is happy shall be happy still; and he that is unhappy shall be
unhappy still."
In Mormon 9:15 it tells us, "And now, O all ye that have imagined up unto yourselves
a god who can do no miracles, I would ask of you, have all these things passed, of which I
have spoken? Has the end come yet? Behold I say unto you, Nay; and God has not ceased to
be a God of miracles.
O then despise not, and wonder not, but hearken unto the words of the Lord, and ask the
Father in the name of Jesus for what things soever ye shall stand in need. Doubt not, but
be believing, and begin as in times of old, and come unto the Lord with all your heart,
and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling before him."
Mormon 9:28,29 "Be wise in the days of your probation; strip yourselves of all
uncleanness; ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts, but ask with a firmness
unshaken, that ye will yield to no temptation, but that ye will serve the true and living
God. See that ye are not baptized unworthily; see that ye partake not of the sacrament of
Christ unworthily; but see that ye do all things in worthiness, and do it in the name of
Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God; and if ye do this, and endure to the end, ye will
in nowise be cast out."
Moroni 7:3-19 "Wherefore, I would speak unto you that are of the church, that are the
peaceable followers of Christ, and that have obtained a sufficient hope by which ye can
enter into the rest of the Lord, from this time henceforth until ye shall rest with him in
heaven. And now my brethren, I judge these things of you because of your peaceable walk
with the children of men. For I remember the word of God, which saith by their works ye
shall know them; for if their works be good, then they are good also.For behold, God hath
said a man being evil cannot do that which is good; for if he offereth a gift, or prayeth
unto God, except he shall do it with real intent it profiteth him nothing. For behold, it
is not counted unto him for righteousness. For behold, if a man being evil giveth a gift,
he doeth it grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained
the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God. And likewise also is it counted evil
unto a man, if he shall pray and not with real intent of heart; yea, and it profiteth him
nothing, for God receiveth none such. Wherefore, a man being evil cannot do that which is
good; neither will he give a good gift.
11 For behold, a bitter fountain cannot bring forth good water; neither can a good
fountain bring forth bitter water; wherefore, a man being a servant of the devil cannot
follow Christ; and if he follow Christ he cannot be a servant of the devil. Wherefore, all
things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the
devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and
enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually. But behold, that which is of
God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth
and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God. Wherefore,
take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or
that which is good and of God to be of the devil. For behold, my brethren, it is given
unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that
ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from
evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do
good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ;
wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. But whatsoever thing
persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God,
then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth
the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels;
neither do they who subject themselves unto him. And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know
the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not
judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged.
Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of
Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and
condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ."
Moroni 10:3-5 "Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it
be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord
hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down unto the time that
ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive
these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of
Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real
intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of
the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all
things."
I recommend that you read my articles entitled "The Promise," "The
Prayer," "The Holy Ghost," and "The Revelation" to better
understand this passage. "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the
only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3
As we compare the Book of Mormon with the Bible, we see their teachings are in harmony
with one another. If the devil is the author of the Book of Mormon, which testifies of
Christ, encourages people to look toward Christ for their salvation, and teaches people
the importance of Christ's atonement, then he would have to be the prince of the
stupidity. But we know that this is not so. Satan does everything he can to lead people
away from Christ. It is the devil who inspires people to kill every prophet whom God has
sent. It was true in ancient times, and it is also true in modern times. It was because
people were inspired of the devil that they killed Joseph Smith.
Is the Book of Mormon really of the devil? If it is we should follow the wise counsel of
Gamaliel as found in Acts 5:34-39: "Then stood there up one in the council, a
Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and
commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; And said unto them, Ye men of Israel,
take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. For before these
days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four
hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered,
and brought to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing,
and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, [even] as many as obeyed
him, were dispersed. And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone:
for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of
God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God."
If the Book of Mormon was written under the inspiration of Satan, it doesn't make sense
for him to be doing a commercial for Jesus. Instead, any book inspired by him we would
expect to see it denying Jesus as our Savior. For example, the Koran is a book its
believers say was delivered to man from an angel. Joseph Smith also claims that he
received his book from an angel. Are these two books the same? Let's compare them and see.
The Koran teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God. It denies that Jesus died on the cross
for our sins. Instead, it claims that Christ's disciples took Him off the cross before He
actually died. Therefore, this book also denies the reality of the resurrection. Rather
than proclaiming Jesus as being the "son of God," the Koran teaches that Jesus
was just another prophet.
I am not attacking the Muslim faith. I am only pointing out that the Koran is radically
different from the gospel which Jesus taught in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon.
This is the kind of difference we would expect to find in the Book of Mormon if it was
inspired by Satan. Instead, we find that the Book of Mormon is a second witness for
Christ. It give us the same view but from a different angle. Furthermore, the Book of
Mormon fulfills Biblical prophecy teachings (see my article entitled "The Bible and
the Book of Mormon")
Yet, despite all of this, there are those who strive to convince people not to read the
Book of Mormon because they say it is from the devil. It makes one wonder where they got
their inspiration to make such a claim.
If the devil inspired the Book of Mormon, probably he was giving a strong testimony of the mission of the Savior, was that his purpose?
