The Serpent
The serpent burrows deep
Beneath the ground among
The dirt and the decay.
It is soulless with its mucky scales repulsing
And its forked tongue seeking
The tender life that dwells
Within a world of darkness.
The serpent slouches through
The tunnels made by other hard workers.
He is in no hurry.
The world he seeks awaits him.
His ugliness inspires fear;
His ruthlessness is but a delusion of power.
Uninhibited he feeds upon earthworms that are meant to renew the earth.
They have much in common- this snake and the worms;
But he is bigger, has more teeth.
He can eat more, so the worms are gone.
The monster lurks self-satisfied and cold-blooded.
His poison seeps into the ground around him turning life into decay.
He will keep on writhing and winning.
He will shed his skin and be forever arrogantly youthful in his sickening way.
Until he at last tires of his small dark world,
Until his own obsession to possess urges him to slide into a bigger world.
A world where his true color lies exposed-
The green that only self-deservedness shows.
And finally one day the worms shall rejoice, for that garbage-colored creature will eventually meet a farmer with a hoe.
