Subject: Weekend Update: January 17, Brrrr2000

There's a Phd, an MA, and a BS under a goose egg.  What is it?  Three
degrees below zero.  And that's what it was this morning when I got
out of bed.  That's farenheit for you Aussies enjoying 32 degrees
centigrade right now.  A week ago, New England was in the 50s (F) and
now we're in the midst of a cold snap.

The christmas decorations are all stowed and the house has returned to
its preholiday order.  Outside decorations will wait for a milder
climate to be taken down.

I've made plane reservations for San Jose in February and will be
bringing my lovely wife along, as long as the eastern US weather
cooperates.  Our itinerary has us in five airports round trip because
it costs one fifth the price of a direct flight.  Go figure.  We are
using the voucher we got from American Airlines for their screwing up
the first day of our cruise last May.  We figure that the added 3-hour
inconvenience is tolerable simply because we will have each other as
traveling companions, let alone the $aving$.  The tricky part will be
getting from Laguardia Airport to JFK airport.

For many people in this country, today is a holiday: Martin Luther
King day. Our girls celebrated the extended weekend by having some
friends visit from Uxbridge.  Andrew was farmed out last night to
visit with a friend, also.

We took both cars to church last night because I had to be there early
and the girls wanted to go out after church late. That happenstance
led to an unfortunate incident back at the homestead.  Emily stoked
the woodstove before she left and put the catalytic filter on to make
it burn slowly while they were gone.  However, the gasket on the top
lid was not properly sealed and it seeped smoke into the room for
about three hours.  There was no danger of fire from the problem but
the barn smells like we've been camping.  Repairing the gasket is
going to the top of my to-do list.
