Subject: Weekend Update: July 18-22, 2001 Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 10:32:54 -0400 From: Mark Metcalfe Organization: Cadence Design Systems, Inc. My brother, Russell Farnaby Metcalfe III, was welcomed to the forties yesterday so I called him up to wish him a happy birthday. His week was a whole lot more hectic than mine, taking Russell Farnaby Metcalfe IV to the emergency room for catching his front tooth on a basketball net that was lowered so the children could have a slam-dunk contest. That, and standing on a nest of hornets made the passage of my youngest brother into his 40s a week to remember. Emily and Andrew were away at camp all last week. From their reports, Andrew worked hard in the kitchen but really enjoyed his time off at the beach and generally goofing around. Emily, as counsellor in training, honed her art of one-upsmanship by the pulling of a few pranks at rival cabins. I did not encourage such behavior; it is probably in her nature. Joy and I, Joy's Dad, and Miranda and Jessica were home for a relatively quiet week - a camp experience of a different kind. I was supposed to hold a cookout for people with whom I work on Tuesday but postponed it one day due to rain. Wednesday was much nicer and the cookout went well. On Thursday, the five of us met the Longs at On the Border (Mexican restaurant) for a nice (Dutch treat) dinner. (I had the T-Bone, of course!) I've been becoming accustomed to my new digital camera toy, taking lots and lots of pictures and downloading them to my computers (home and work). I have too many to attach but I have already sent attachments to some people for individual pics. I now have indoor pics of the house that some of you have been waiting for. I'll have to organize some of these and post them on my web site. (Someday.) With my father-in-law around, we spent the time in making a few backup CDs for his music, typing an important letter for him, playing cards, and watching a bunch of movies. We never did get to tear down the snow blower and work on it. That may have contributed to the really good time he had spent with us. I did manage to do just about nothing on Saturday; first in a long time. I wedged myself into an inner tube and floated the afternoon away in the pool. I burned my upper arms so that I had to seek shade all day Sunday. This week, Emily and Miranda are off to camp; Mandy as a counsellor and Emily as a camper. Emily was home less than 24 hours; enough time to do her laundry. Pop Crawford headed back to Pennsylvania today, but we won't be a family of four for long. My cousin Kendra from Oklahoma is in the area with four female tag-alongs and we'll be enjoying their company later in the week! They brought the Oklahoma summer temperatures with them. The "fundrazor" has begun at my church in earnest and I am waiting to see if I get cut, clipped, or shorn (depending on the amount raised). (Some have asked about "shaved" but I'm not sure any of us would want to go that far!) If the target money is raised for the African Nazarene School of Extension (ANSE) where Ramby and Karen (Hetrick) Campbell are serving in Southern Africa, the event should commence on August 5 (or thereabouts). Additionally, the hair will be donated to Locks for Love, an organization that makes wigs for children who lose their hair to chemotherapy. Just how long has my hair become? Well, I will attach one picture that was taken yesterday at church. Maybe you'd like to help ensure a shearing?
