Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 16:21:14 -0400 Subject: Weekend Update: September 7-9 2001 Emily Pearl is a girl and she looks adorable in her High School Marching Band uniform. There is something about a uniform that turns one's head. She cautioned Joy and I from attending the first football game of the year, telling us that the band and the football team were not quite up to entertainment standards. I beg to differ but for a different reason than she would cite. However, we opted to spend the evening at home to follow Emily's advice. I expect that we'll catch some high school football this Fall just to take in the experience of the local scene, concession stand food, and of course cheer wildly for the floutist with the flourish. The first week of school has passed with our children slipping somewhat comfortably back into the routine. Homework and covering books are the activities at home. The college kids caught the T with friends into Boston for a day of play. They seem to have started the new semester well. Miranda is the nomad for her final semester, spending weekends at home and with friends (working while she sleeps some of the time!) during the week. We're glad for her to come home and go to church with us. Joy prepared the Manor for the annual church Choir picnic. I did my usual 20% of the work to get it ready for the party. Luckily, summer weather has hung on despite a few of our trees getting a head start into the foliage season. The horseshoe pit was given a workout with some competitive foursomes. The pool was still open, too, and the water was a refreshing 72 degrees. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the food that was brought to the pot-luck. We spent some time listening to the Christmas musical as well. The official time for the choir picnic was 1-5 but as usual, we enjoyed the company of a number of people into the evening hours, around some leftover cake and conversation in the kitchen. It was probably our last lazy summer Sunday, and the Magnusons joined us that afternoon in and around the pool. 72 degrees was too cold for Eric. (Now, if you remember my early summer reports, it would be too cold for me, too! But I was of a different mind on Sunday as I steeped in the cool water.) I may get one more lazy summer day this weekend as I head west for a trip to San Jose on business. We'll see. Mark P.S. Joy probably won't like the photo I'm sending (too much sun in her face) but I like it: a picture of a couple of good buddies! -- +---_-----------+ Mark Metcalfe, metcalfe@cadence.com | c a d e n c e | Cadence Design Systems, Inc.
