Tue Jun 18 13:23 EDT 1996 Update on my mother... Note: Mom is home now. I spoke with Mom this morning and she said that she was going out to play basketball today. The doctor said she could, so maybe she got a blood transfusion from Michael Jordan. Mom said she was "up and dressed" but has a truck load of pills to take. The truck load may diminish over time to a car load of pills. I told her that she should grind them all up and put them in something to drink like Metamucil, or *with* Metamucil! I know many of you supported my mother in prayer and we are grateful for your prayers. We Christians may not "grieve as others who have no hope" but we do grieve and we were not ready to grieve, and thank the Lord for His kindness. My mother will be the age her father was when he died of a heart attack next week (or this week). My mother's mom died after open heart surgery because a dislodged blood clot made it to her brain. You can guess what was going through all of our minds with this episode. The doctors feel that we averted a heart attack in progress, catching it early enough that little to no damage was done to her heart. In fact, the diagnosis was acute angina at first until the blood work showed the enzymes indicative of (a very tiny) heart attack. The angioplasty was done on one artery which had a 60% blockage. The doctors said that the other three arteries seemed fine. For those of you who don't know, angioplasty involves small incisions near the groin into which the equipment travels to the heart via a major leg artery. When they get to the affected area, they basically inflate a balloon to reopen the blocked artery. Recovery time is very quick because the chest cavity never has to be opened. I am also told that the patient can feel an immediate change in their energy once the arteries are unblocked. (Hence the basketball stuff in the first paragraph.) If any of you medical people on my list need to correct this layman's view, feel free. as long as everyone gets out okay. We're hoping that mom can come and visit us this weekend.
