Mon Nov 18 07:57 EST 1996 Eight to Twenty On Friday, after loaning my car to go to Manchester, Connecticutt, for a teen quiz event, I stopped by CompUSA and picked up four bags of chips, which cost me $160. These were 4MB 30-pin SIMM chips and the price on memory has gotten so cheap, I've been wondering when to take the plunge. I couldn't stand it any longer and went out and spent the dough to upgrade my computer from 8MB RAM to 20MB RAM. It was very easy to install, making sure that I was always discharged of static electricity. Now I have four 1MB SIMMs that I'm wondering what to do with. Anybody out there with an IBM compatible still running on 4MB of RAM? If these puppies fit into your system, you will notice a major performance improvement from 4->8MB. (Pentium users need not apply - this means you, Russ.) I figured that I won't be updating my computer to the sleek and speedy pentium machine until at least Mandy goes to college and that's two years (less than) down the road. So a cheap improvement to my 486 DX2/50 was to boost its memory. I've noticed an improvement on the big applications but I haven't given it a proper spin around the block to know. I also spent time on Saturday creating a pair of boot files for those times I play memory-intensive games that hog (and need) conventional memory. I'm pretty happy with the results. Oh, I also ran MEMMAKER and had to revert to previous settings because MEMMAKER whacked a few things, like being able to read my CD-ROM. By the way, those 8X CD-ROMs are down to about $130.00. I'm working on a justification proposal on that one! ;-) Saturday morning was another rehearsal for the teen/children's Christmas play. It's that time of year. Oh yes, Miranda placed third out of all the quizzers at the quiz meet. That's quite an accomplishment! Anybody want to buy a bag of chips?
