Mon Jun 2 08:28 EDT 1997 Weekend Update: May 30-June 1 Over this past weekend, I swapped Saturday and Friday, so I could accomplish more than if I kept them in their ordinal sequence. The weatherpersons all said Friday would be the better day of the two and at first I just thought that I'd enjoy Friday with my wife and catch up on some work at work on Saturday. I did enjoy Friday, but Joy and I accomplished more than we would on a Saturday because of the kids going hither and yon. We opened the pool and it had fuzzy green stuff on the walls and green water. Only my almost-nine-year-old boy said he wouldn't mind jumping in. We thought the professional pool closers accidentally threw in chemicals for a chlorine pool, and the previous owner had bacquacil. We've been working on the pool over the weekend and three days later we've managed different shades of green. Still, we're hopeful that by the time warm weather arrives, we'll be ready. (New England is basking in Spring-like mild weather.) I drove up and down Main street in Pepperell, looking for a place to get my hair cut but chickened out and went back to Nashua to the place that has been cutting my hair. I don't know why; they have done lousy cuts before but nice cuts at other times. I kind of felt like Mel's Barber Boutique on Main St. was too close to Floyd the Barber in Mayberry, North Carolina and I didn't want to come out looking like Barney Fife. On Saturday, the family went in three directions: two kids to a district church activity, me to work, and Joy and two more at home. When no one is around at work, I can crank out lots of pages, and I did. When we came home, Joy was mowing the lawn. I immediately scolded her and told her to get in the shade. The fair Irish skin on her arms, legs, and face were red as beets! She was just trying to be nice and finish the lawn that needed to be cut. On Sunday, we again split up because I attended the wedding of a long-time friend and associate Don Slovenkai to Felicitas (Fe) Fandreyer. The ceremony took place as an integrated part of the Episcopal church service and was beautiful. This was my first experience in an Episcopal church, and I also have my very first taste of wine yesterday; just enough to partake in the sacrament of communion (for all of you Nazarenes out there). (If you care, it reminded me a little of cough syrup.) Christ Church in Fitchburg is an ornate and lovely church. My only complaint was the short-seated pews with straight backs. I was situated at the exact spot to see the face of the choir director in her organ mirror. (She both played and led at the same time.) The music was good and the people friendly, and the wedding was very well integrated. We capped off the weekend with ice cream with some friends on Sunday evening. All in all, a not-so-quiet weekend in Lake Wobegone, but certainly par for the course.
