Mon Jul 28 07:28 EDT 1997 Weekend Update: July 25-27 On Friday I bought a new system box for my computer. For all you bit-heads out there, it's an Intel p-166, with Intel Triton motherboard, 512K cache, 16MB Ram, 2.1GB Western Digital HD, 16X Toshiba CD-Rom, 2MB 64-bit cirrus logic (Vram), Acer 3D FX sound card, 240W speakers, 1.44 diskette drive, keyboard, mouse, tower, Win95, multimedia software, for $844.33. I installed it over the weekend and the only thing I'm NOT happy with is the Acer sound card. It isn't recognized by one of my games and that's irritating me. I plan to take the sound blaster card out of my 486 DX/2-50 computer and swap them. I should be in good shape then, unless I'm missing a driver. Setting up was a challenge. I needed a new modem cord (because of serial port). The cable or the adapter were the same price! I got the cable. I loaded up software from scratch, thinking that I'd copy over some configuration files from the old computer to the new one. In some cases, this did the trick but I had to get creative in others. Juno gave me trouble but the email accounts are all set. Since the old computer has all previous email, folks, Joy, Miranda, Jessica, Emily, and Andrew, won't be able to go back and read mail. I believe we downloaded the mail before I made the transition. They will have to reenter their address books until I get a monitor for the old machine. It was funny, because I was going to my old machine (sans monitor) and copying files blindly off the system. You have to imagine where you are in DOS to do this, but it worked for most of what I needed. I'm nearly where I want to be with the new system. Then I'll be looking for a used color monitor to complete the old machine. Anyone out there upgrade to a 17" and want to sell their old 14"? Saturday yielded some primo deals at the yard sales. Best deal for me was a pair of inline skates (my size!) for $4.00. Even if I never use them, I can resell them in a yard sale of my own! Blueberries continue to be harvested; black raspberries are ripening, and the plums are just beginning to change color. Joy has the garden under control. Sunday, we welcomed guests at the Manor for afternoon cooling in the pool and... my cousin Kendy from Oklahoma, with her two daughters (Dana and Jennifer), and my nephews, Ben and Jake. Today, my uncle Ken delivers a sign he made for us to be hung outside our house. We designed it in Texas and I am told he's done a fantastic job. The sign will read: "Metcalfe Manor c. 1860." It will be a neat addition to the house... which should be getting a new roof this week. That's all for now. Have a pleasant week (mine promises to be very hectic).
