Mon Dec 29 08:05 EST 1997 Weekend update: Between Christmas and New Year's Day Christmas with my family almost wasn't because of a snow storm that dropped 23 inches on poor Pepperell. Because it was the day before, we were able to shovel things out enough to get the family cars in. We had a good representation of the Metcalfe family (15 out of 21) and a lovely turkey dinner. So I did have Thanksgiving with my family after all. Later on, we passed out the children to each other for overnighters. Johnny went with Ben, Andrew went with Joe, and Danielle went with Emily overnight and all day Friday. I hear Andrew had a good time, and we very much enjoyed hosting a niece. We were expecting a big snow storm tomorrow (12/30; they are predicting all rain, at the moment). We went out anyway and bought some snow insurance: four snow shovels to add to the ones we already have. We told the kids they could each choose one a decorate it any way they liked, as long as it got used. I figure six shovels working in concert will make quick work of the driveway. Our first Christmas at the Manor was very pleasant. I don't think any really "spectacular presents" were given. Perhaps it was only that all those good gifts were far overshadowed by a sense of warmth and love; a joy and gladness just to be with each other. We had other guests over the long weekend. We fill our time with people because it is the relationships that count in this life. We hope that your 1998 will be filled with people! People to love you and to be loved by you. Happy New Year.
