Weekend Update: January 9-11

Miranda gets top billing in this missive for the second week in a row.
She had her first "solo flight" as she made plans to visit her friend,
Kristi Linton, at Eastern Nazarene College.  She had our approval but
had to make her own way there and back.  When she left on Thursday,
she had half of her plans in place, persuading her uncle Steve to come
up from Quincy to pick her up.  Getting down to Quincy was one thing;
getting back was another and she would not ask us to pick her up
because she "didn't think we'd say yes."

Somehow, Grandpa Metcalfe wound up taking her to North Station on
Sunday afternoon where she caught a commuter train to Billerica where
the Magnusons picked her up and brought her to church.

Joy and I were not at all unfeeling through this adventure.  It was at
times difficult to NOT step in and help in some way other than advice.
In fact, I even called my mom for her advice to confirm that the right
thing for me to do was nothing at all.  So Mandy's adventure was our
adventure too, except that she probably had more fun than we did.
She's a big girl [make that young woman] and will be doing more and
more things independent of her parents and family.

On another note, I had the privilege to sing at the wedding of Joe and
Heidi Farris on Friday night.  What a delight that was!  I think I'm
turning into an old softy; I really enjoy weddings... other people's
kid's weddings.  Afterward, I had my first taste of oysters on the
half shell, which tasted like squishy clams to me.  They gave me
interesting dreams that night, though.

The Christmas decorations are almost down and put away.  The winter
chores begin in earnest this month.  See you around (some of you).
