Mon Jun 8 08:59 EDT 1998 Weekend Update: June 4-6 I made good time on Thursday to PA, compressing a 5-hour trip into 4 hours. It might even be one of the longer computer service calls that one has to make, putting my father-in-law back in business to receive email. The 5-hour trip back took five hours because of stopovers at Hope and Tom's erecting edifice and the 99-cent Whopper. I brought back a momento from the Scheuermann Homestead which I will display at the Manor somewhere. As of Friday, I am the father of a high school graduate. It was kind of funny (and even Miranda admitted) because we moved to Pepperell last year, and Mandy has been in college (dual enrollment) for all of her senior year. The ceremony was for a bunch of kids who went to school together, and Miranda was there, too. They played a song called "Born in a Small Town." It was for these reasons we didn't invite a lot of people to her graduation but instead invited people to our celebration of her "passing." She graduated with honors and a small scholarship from the Lion's Club. (Every bit helps.) If you would like to celebrate her graduation with us (and are able), you are welcome to join us this Saturday (6/13); RSVP please. Speaking of graduation parties, we hosted one Saturday at the Manor for Brian Wallace, who graduated with a Bachelor's degree from UMass Lowell. I called it the "Most Eligible Bachelor's" degree because of all the single girls that showed up to the party. The pool was open. Those of you outside of New England probably don't know that we've been experiencing cooler temperatures for June, only reaching about 70 degrees (F). Do you think this would stop the under-13 crowd? Not on your life. If the ice floes have melted, kids will swim. Joy, my father-in-law, and I excused ourselves from the most excellent adventure graduation party to attend Emily and Andrew's school band concert. Pepperell, the speck on the map that it is, has an excellent band program. It's *beginner* band has about 150 members! The Jazz band, which is made up of 6th, 7th and 8th graders, rival most high school jazz bands and it is the goal to which the beginner band aspires (4th and 5th grades). The band director in town has the closest thing to job security there is in the public school system. The painting of the house is 99% done. We have some small details and stencilling to do and we can put the paint cans away for a long time. I hope to get to these things this week so I can snap and scan pictures for you all to see. So far the house is getting good reviews. (The TV hasn't been fixed yet, but that's another story. Suffice to say that Circuit City doesn't live up to its motto.) This week, Emily (Emily_Metcalfe@juno.com) gets the highest Caravan award (the P.F. Brisee), Jessica (Jessica_Metcalfe@juno.com) is one of the featured pianists at the Cove Keyboard Concert, Andrew (Andrew_Metcalfe@juno.com) plays more baseball, and Mandy (Miranda_Metcalfe@juno.com) gets celebrated. We hope to see as many of you as can make it. My father (eflactem@aol.com) was named "Pastor of the Year" by the New England District Church of the Nazarene. He almost didn't show because of an infection that took hold of him, but Mom was urged to get him to the Assembly (across the street) for his annual report. To many of us, he's always been "Pastor of the Year" but it is nice to see him recoginized in this way. I wish that it was one of the ceremonies I could have attended.
