Dear Sir:
Yours of the 28th ult. was received with thanks. You stated that if you had some information as to Mr. George E. Van Woert's relationship you might be able to give us some in return. Therefore what we know now is as follows:
George E. Van Woert was born January 1, 1848. He was the only child of Isaac Van Woert, w Eliza Silvernail Van Woert died at the birth of George. Isaac died June 15, 1885 in Brooklyn. In other words can you give us the names of Isaac's brothers and sisters or the names of all the children of Tunis? If you cannot give us the names of all of them, give us the names of those you can and also tell us if you know about when each died and what children each left. Your early attention will very greatly oblige,

Very truly,

Notes: Harmen L. Van Woert was a farmer in Van Woert Hollow in the Candor Township. He moved to that area from Spencer about the same time his parents did. It is uncertain what took Harmen L. (aka Levi) to Illinois. I have searched the Archives in Washington, DC and could not find Civil War records for him even though he would have been of the age to fight in that war. There was a William Thorton, age 26, born in NY, who was also living in Boone Co. at the same time as Levi and Ruth. It is purely speculation that Ruth (age 33) may have been his older sister. It is also interesting to note that Lewis M. (Levi M. ?) and his wife Adaline were also living in Boone County, Illinois in 1868. If I am correct on the parentage of Lewis M. (Levi M. ?), he and Harmen Levi would have been first cousins.

Harmon Q. Van Woert

Father: Jacob Van Woert
Mother: Neeltie (Quackenbush) Van Woert (aka Elenor Van Woert)

Spouse: Elizabeth Gould and/or Elizabeth (Betsy) Vose b. 1811
Marriage: Betsy Vose in 1830

    Child 1: Harmen Levi b. 10/15/1830
Child 2: Smith (Rueben Smith) b. abt. 1838

    Child 4: Betsy b. abt. 1847
    Child 5: Jacob b. abt. 1850
Child 6: Chester b. June or July 1851
    Child 7: Charles b. 5/1852
    Child 8: Susan
    Child 9:
    Child 10:

Notes: According to the Quackenbush Family by A.S. Quackenbush, Harmen married Elizabeth Gould. A descendant has record that he married Elizabeth Vose, daughter of Jacob and Abigail Persis (Dickerman) Vose in 1830. One census record states that Harmen had 10 children. I was able to locate seven children with the use of census records. Dr. Van Woert also believes there was a child named Susan (from deed records) and therefore included her in this family. A volunteer at the Tioga County Historical Society wrote, "I think Harmon may have been married before and had 4 ch., but this is just a guess!!" If this is true, I presume they would have been Harmen Levi and three others. Possibly this Susan was one of them because she never shows up in the census record after 1850 when names of household inhabitants are given.
Harmen moved to Spencer around 1827 along with his brother Lewis Van Woert and was involved in Agriculture. The Spencer Presbyterian Church records show that Betsy Van Woert (Mrs. Harmon) became a member in 10/1834 and died in 1/1874. The same record shows that Harmon also became a member in 1834, but left in 1855. Harmon sold his property in the Town of Spencer to Lewis and moved to the Town of Candor on the Watkins and Flint Purchase. This is actually only a couple of miles from the Spencer property "as the crow flies".
