Her honest and gripping portrayal of Jude was one of the many highlights of Casualty, a series that, like Lisa herself, is sadly neglected on the Web. I am hoping to rectify these omissions and would be grateful for information to help me expand on the rather meagre offerings here at the moment!
Lisa was born on 10 July 1970, the daughter of Ann Beach, a RADA trained actress whose credits range from Jackanory and Rainbow to Under Milk Wood, and Francis Coleman, a Producer/Director who teaches at the National Film School.
Her late sister Charlotte Coleman appeared in four series of Worzel Gummidge, and Educating Marmalade, and more recently in Oranges are not the Only Fruit and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Lisa went to Anna Sher's theatre school at six, and her first TV appearance, at the same age, was in Crown Court. Lisa's other TV Credits include Doctors and Nurses; A Walk in the Forest; Elizabeth Alone; Travellers By Night; London's Burning; Eastenders; Redemption; Fatal Inversion; Seven Deadly Sins: Sloth; The Bill (in which her sister and mother have also appeared); Absolutely Fabulous; Scene:Thin Ice; The Chief; Scarlet and Black (as Elisa, 1993); French and Saunders; Press Gang; Scene:Sabs; and, of course,Casualty as Staff Nurse Jude Kocarnik (1994-97). She has also appeared in the film Loophole, a 1980 bank job film also known as Break In.
It was reported a few years ago that Lisa lives in Bristol with three cats, and has a boyfriend, an actor whose identity she keeps a secret. Previously she lived in squats and housing co-ops in Islington, doing voluntary work and singing for a funk band called the Hot Heads. She has been a vegetarian since the age of 11, and is a supporter of a woman's right to choose. After A levels, her plan was to become a clinical psychologist or psychiatric nurse - she spent a year teaching English in Botswana before doing two years of an Open University degree in clinical psychology . To earn some money, she spent some time as a nude model for the artist Euan Oglow.
Casualty storylines featuring her character Jude included becoming a buddy for an AIDS patient, a one-night stand with hospital receptionist Matt that led to an unwanted pregnancy (despite taking safe sex precautions) and an abortion, and her stabbing by a patient, providing a real cliff-hanger ending (watched by more than 16 million viewers) to the penultimate episode of the 1996-97 series - her return to consciousness being the last shot of the last episode. In the new series, Charlie refers to a postcard saying that Matt and Jude have been married in Cyprus, so perhaps we can hope for a cameo appearance in the future!
After Casualty, she was planning to travel to Cuba and Peru, and wants to see the world's great waterfalls. In the longer term, she hopes to have a family, whilst areas of work that interest her include working with traumatised children, writing for TV, and making documentaries.
