| By this time the Martin family had accepted the gospel and the people from Doe Creek helped to fill the "Little white chapel on the hill." Our happy and most glorious time was when our Mission President would call a conference to be held at Mountain Lake (as that was the name of this Branch). The Smiths all met with the missionaries. President Callis, who was over the Southern States mission for at least fifteen years was a great missionary. We called him Paul of old. We did thrill at his presence and he spoke so forcibly you could hear him for miles. His voice was very clear and convincing. Folks from all over the country would attend, perhaps mainly for the good food which was spread on the ground, but, they did get to hear the word of the Lord whether or not it sank in, that remains to be seen. Those were glorious times. When this second chapel was dedicated we had moved to Welch, West Virginia but, we did come back for the two days feast when it was dedicated and furnished food to help feed the multitude of people. After we left the mountain we had no church to attend in Welch so until we moved to Huntington, West Virginia we sort of got away from church. However, we did have a good branch in Huntington and we did attend but it was never like the Little white chapel on the hill. I suppose that is very reasonable too because there is where we first heard the gospel message and that Little chapel will always hold first place. We spent around four or five years in Huntington, West Virginia and from there we went to Columbus Ohio. |
