outrages & massacres upon ye poor peoples; Killed to the number thirty-nine

Boune says that James's house on the Berwick road was burned and "all his
Family" was taken, He said also that "he had but two children... Both were too
young to travel and we suppose, were killed." Were they Mary b. 1700 and James,
b. 1701/2?
A longer tale is in the tract" A Memorial of the Present Deplorable State of
New England" (N.Y.Docs.,IV,pg 116) This Paper say's that Cathrine had had a
baby about 10 days before the atack...
James and his wife seem to have been held in Montreal in the house where Mrs.
Hannah Sheldon of Deerfield was kept; for John Sheldon, writting to her from
Quebec, in April 1705,sent message to " Mr Addams and his wif," and desired
"that Mr. Addams and you wod doe al you can with your mistrss that my children
mite be redemed from the indanes."
M. de Vaudreuil writing to Dudley(the govener) feom Quebec, June 2, 1706, says
"I send back to you two of your prisoners named James Adams and Fletcher, who
have been accused here of making counterfeit paper money, and convited on
their own confession. Their trail was began in this county only to find out
how much they had made and whether they had french accomplices. The trail ended
there, and would not have been began, had it not been indispensable that we
should ascertain this. I have acted in this matter with the same spirit and the
same moderation which you have shown in the case of two of my people who
deserved punishment as yours deserve it." Adams was one of the 44 exchanged for
those french prisoners who had been returned to Port Royal in December 1705,
They sailed on the Bark MARIE arriving in Boston August 1, 1706.
On sunday Nov 9, 1704, Clement, born the day before was baptized by father
Meriel. His parents formerly of wells in N.E. were then dwelling in the service
of Mr. Pierre le Gardeur de Repentigny Ecuyer and Captain. The baby's godfather
was Mr. Jacques le ber and his godmother Damoiselle Agatha de Nerre, wife of
Mr. Pierre le Gardeur.
Immediatly below was the record of it's burial - age 2 days. Father Merial and
a pupil at the seminary witnessed.
The next November (1705) another Clement, son of Jaques Adams, Weaver was
baptized. It sponsors were Robert de Portier ECUYER, SIEUR du BUISSON, and
Damoiselle Marie Elizabeth Rochert, daughter of the keeper of the King's
stores. James Addams signed with the others. But this clement lived only 3
months and 2 priests with Samuel William, son of M. Jean Williams, minister of
Deerfield, witness its burial.
Evidently the title to Adams' homestead was questioned for in 1734 Samuel
Wheelwright testified at York that Adams lived on a certain piece of land
called "The Gore" for about four years "till ye Indians took him & his famaly &
burnt his House." He had always understood that Adams owned a hundred acres and
had heard that the deed was burnt with the house, adding "& I am realy of
opinnion it was so."
