Colonel William Johnson

William Johnson, born in Madison Co., Va. in 1714, married Elisabeth Cave in 1742, died in 1765. His children were Robert, Nancy, Hannah, Benjamin, Mildred, Elisabeth Cave and Sally Valentine.

Elisabeth Cave was the fifth child of Benjamin Cave and Hannah Bledsoe. She was born in Madison Co., Va. in 1720, died and was buried in Orange County in 1785. William Johnson was a representative from Orange County in the House of Burgesses in 1756.

Robert was born July 17, 1745, married Jemima Suggett (born June 29, 1753) in Orange County Va., 1770 and died at Warsaw, Kentucky Feb. 23, 1814. His children were Betsy, James, William, Sally, Richard M., Benjamin, Robert, John T., Joel, George W. and Henry.

1.) Betsy, born April 10, 1772 married Gen. John Payne (1812) in Scott County, Ky., June 28, 1787. She died Nov., 1845. Her children were: Asa, Robert, Nancy, Sally, John, Betsy, Newton, William J., Thomas J., Franklin, Richard, Cyrus, Emeline.

2.) James Johnson, born 1774, married Nancy Payne in Fayette County, Ky., and died in 1826. Issue: Edward P., William, Ann, Darwin, Eveline J., Adaline, Henry P., James, Richard, Nancy, Leonidas, Jemima.

3). William Johnson, born in Orange Co., Va., Dec. 7, 1775, married Betsy Payne in Fayette Co. Ky., Dec. 28, 1801 and died April 25, 1814. Betsy was born May 28, 1785 and died April 11, 1838. Issue: Alfred P., Euclid L., Madison C., Thomas P., George W., William H.

4). Sallie Johnson, born in Orange Co. Va. Jan. 21, 1778, married Gen. William Ward at Great Crossings, Scott Co., Ky. Dec. 28, 1795. Her children were Robert J., Polly, Betsy J., Junius R., Malvina J., Sally, George W., William Henry.

5). Richard M. Johnson, soldier and Vice President, never married.

6). Benjamin John [sic] born in Scott County, July 22, 1784, married Matilda Williams, Sept. 8, 1811, and died Oct. 2, 1849. Lived in Arkansas. Issue: Juliet E., Robert W., George J., Benjamin S., Richard H., James B., Charles E., Irene M.

7). Robert Johnson born April 25, 1786, died in Scott County, Aug. 5, 1812.

8). John T. Johnson, the grand old Christian soldier, was born at Great Crossings, Oct. 5, 1788, married Sophia E. Lewis, Oct. 9, 1811 and died in Lexington, Mo. Dec 18, 1856. Issue: Elizabeth, Benjamin, Douglas A., Alpheus, Sallie A., Mary S., Emily W., Laura V., Victor and John T.

9). Joel Johnson, born Dec. 15, 1790, married Verlinda Offutt, Feb. 18, 1817 and died June 26, 1846. Issue: Lycurgus, Julia, Fielder, John T., Elizabeth, Sally, Cyrus, Victor and Helen.

10). George W. Johnson was born Nov. 18, 1792, died May 17, 1810.

11). Capt. Henry Johnson born Dec. 30, 1794, married Betsy J. Flournoy, April 2, 1816, and died April 2, 1862. Issue: Robert A., Claudius M., Margaret J., Emily M., Elizabeth J., Lou E., Henry J., Charles F., Benjamin S., Matthew F., Mary Bell.
