Surname: Steel, Lyon

In Sept. 1784, former New York Volunteers, Sergeant Matthew Steele and

Private Ruben Lyons, shared a land grant in Keswick. Steel apparently

remained, receiving a second grant in 1808 at St. Marys, York County. Lyons

removed to Naaswack. Later, in 1811, a Ruebin Lyons was listed in Lubec,

Maine, along with wife Dorothy, and the following children, all born in New

Brunswick: Matthew, Mary, Dorothy, Salome, Ann, Agnes, Ruebin, Hannah,

Susannah, Jemima and Barbara. Seeking VR information (1)that indicates

whether Ruebin of the NYV was the same as Ruebin in Lubec, Maine; (2) that

indicates his wife's surname; (3)that provides the place of birth for his

children; and, (4) that indicates the relationship between Ruebin and

Matthew Steel, suggested by the given name of Ruebin's oldest son.

I found this family recorded on a 1811 Census for inhabitants of Lubec: Done for Act of Incorporation June 21, 1811 and recorded by town clerk S Beal on March 12 1811. I have not been able to add the connection yet. BUT TO HELP WITH THE SEARCH I AM TEMPERARILY CONNECTING THIS LINE.

Notes for ERROLD NORMAN GRASSE:

Errold was born and brought up in Randolph MA. Sometime after his marriage to Mabel and before their first child they moved to Brooklyn, NY and when Elihu Norman was about five they moved back to Randolph, MA and stayed their until the entire family moved here to ME in 1939. The original house which was a beautiful old two story wood frame house was lost in the early 70's during a very wet season when the back side of the house's foundation let go and the entire two story back wall just fell into the field leaving the rest of the house intact but very airy. Needless to say the house had to be torn down and my grandparents built themselves a small four room house. My parents live in that residence with some other added rooms.

Groom Name: GRASSE ELIHU N

Groom Town/State: WEST GARDINER, ME

Date of Marriage: Saturday December 30, 1944

Notes for BARBARA DORENE DAY:

Mom was brought up in the back woods of Hodgdon. She tells of working in the woods with her dad. Of having her own tools for pealing bark off of trees and being the youngest(age 7) and best peeler they had. Her first Christmas present she remembers was a cloth doll made by her mon from one of her dads sock. It was a very hard life compared to ours today. Mom is still a very hard worker even at the age of 73 she still gardens, cuts wood, bowls, and babysitts for the greatgrandchildren.

I remember visiting the small cabin as a child on what they called the horseback. It no longer exists but my Uncle Percy now lives on that same road but at a different location. He went back to his roots after retiring from the Air Force.
