Troop 45's History
1998
50 Miler (April)
The Troop went on a 50 mile canoe trip on the Nottoway River in Southern
Virginia. 10 Scouts, and 4 adult leaders braved the spring rapids of the
rain swollen Nottoway River, and camped 4 nights and 5 days to complete
the trip. All of the scouts and the adults had a blast, even though at
times, they even grew a few more gray hairs! A few of the Scouts earned
the Canoeing Merit Badge. The older scouts were paired up with the less
experienced Scouts, 2 per canoe. Even though it was early April, it did
get hot for a few days, and it was lucky for us that most of the trip the
river was shaded by trees on both sides of the river. The last day, the
rain fell, right after we packed up camp and started the last leg of the
river. When we pulled the canoes out of the water at the town of Courtland,
the police came out to find out what was going on; for we came out of the
river right behind the city jail, and they must have thought there was
an escape going on. Lastly, I was finally able to walk a couple of miles
to the nearest store to quench my thirst for a Pepsi.
