Troop 45's Scoutmaster
Scoutmaster: Darnell Hlavinka
Hello, my name is Darnell and I'm very proud to have been elected as Troop
45's newest Scoutmaster. He have been involved in Boy Scouts since, as
a boy, he joined Troop 170 sponsored by Mountain View Elementary School
in Corvallis, Oregon. Troop 170 was and still is active in the Oregon Trail
Council. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1978, and has held almost
every position in Troop 170, up to the position of Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.
In 1973, Darnell and most of Troop 170 attended the 1973 National Jamboree
at Farragut State Park, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. While there, he met a
Scout from Japan and they both exchanged uniform shirts and berets. Darnell
has attended several summer camps at Camp Melakwa and Camp Alton F. Baker,
Camp Baker was his favorite, and he served as a Counselor in Training,
and also Dining Hall Steward. Darnell was also a Brotherhood member of
the Order of the Arrow, Talapus Chapter of Tsisquan
Lodge. While involved in the Order of the Arrow, he was a member of
his Chapter's Indian Dance Team, and had performed "fancy dancing" at several
Scout-O-Ramas, Cub Scout Day Camp, Girl Scout Day Camp, as well as several
local Troop meetings. He had also attended several Conclaves, at one, he
had Cheif Frank White Buffalo Man, Great Grandson of Sitting Bull from
the Souix Tribe autograph his Brotherhood sash. He came back to Scouting
when his sons were old enough to be Tiger Cubs, and shortly thereafter,
he became a Cub Scout Den Leader for Pack 45, sponsored by Fort Eustis
Youth Activities. With his wife Jean as his assistant, they had worked
with the Cub Scouts over the past few years, and he has earned the following
Cub Scout Award knots: Cub Scouter, Den Leader, and Webelos Den Leader
Awards. After both sons were in Boy Scouts, he was able to devote his time
to Troop 45, starting as a Troop Committee member, and then a merit badge
counselor. When the previous Scoutmaster was getting ready to retire from
the Navy, and move from the area, he was approached by the Committee Chairman
and the out-going Scoutmaster, to consider being the Scoutmaster. They
agreed that he was the best choice since he was an Eagle Scout. "Well,
let me tell you, I was a little hesitant at first, but I have very good
adult leaders, so I wound up jumping in feet first, and I've had alot of
fun since then."
