To get a colors for your background, all you do is type this...
In the body tag after BODY, but before the final > type
<BODY BGCOLOR="rrggbb">

The rrggbb is the hexadecimal representation of the color you want.
To see all of the colors, go here.

I recommend always changing the color of your background. For some reason
sometimes your background image will not show up, so if you have a white background but your text is white, no one will be able to see it. So it
is always best to match the color of the background as closely as you can
to the image you may have.

Ok, now you have a color that looks better than grey, how about a background?
You do the same as above, except you add BACKGROUND="whatever.gif"
so it will look like this...
