Summary:

The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan is about a mother's background and how she experienced her marriage. Actually, it's an

unforgettable and unlucky story.

This book is told by using a conversation form. It's the conversation between Pearl and her mother, Winnie. At the beginning of

the book, Pearl used to tell everything. Then, her mother had conversation with Pearl. Meanwhile, Winnie told her daughter

about everything. Everything she experienced in China. Her nightmare with her marriage.

Winnie had a dark and lonely childhood. Her mother is just one of her father's wives. Her mother didn't tell her anything and just

left. Winnie never got to know the reason why her mother left this family. At this moment, Winnie felt helpless because no body

would tell her what to do and what's going on with the family.

Later on, Winnie's family sent her from Shanghai to Tsungming Island, she lived there for almost twelve years. She married with

a man called Wen Fu. This is the time that Winnie's real affliction began. When they got married, the war between China and

Japan really began. But Winnie didn't notice, Wen Fu treated Winnie so badly. He asked Winnie to do things he wanted. Her

whispered Winnie to say dirty words. Wen Fu's action is just like how a master treats his slave. (At that time it was the feudal

society, a woman's position was very low). Winnie couldn't do anything. She felt painful. Winnie met Helen after she get

married. She really learn a lot from Helen. Day after day, Winnie found out more about Wen Fu. Wen Fu's behavior became

worst day after day, there is no way to exist. Until Winnie met her second husband Jimmy, Winnie realized she found her true

love. Winnie tried to run away from her first husband, finally she succeeded. Winnie and Jimmy both went to America and

started their new life there.

From my point of view, the title "The Kitchen God's Wife" refers to a woman, a powerful woman who had control on herself

but not any one else. A well-known woman who know what's wrong and what's right. A woman can be in charge of her own

life. In Chinese society, there is a god in charge of kitchen. We often pay special respect to it. The main character, Winnie

desired to gain respect from people. Is just like a Chinese woman desired to gain respect from man.
