Backpackers Accommodation in New Zealand

Our experiences using budget accommodation...
We decided the best way to stay while travelling was in Backpackers and Youth Hostels.
The relatively high cost of motel-type accommodation in New Zealand, and the discomfort of camping out in winter (although we did on a few occasions), meant that hostels were our best option.
We always got double rooms (as couples do), and generally paid between $15 and $30 (NZ) per-person for them. (Hostels generally advertise the price per-person - remember to double it for two people.)
Rather than specifically mention hostel prices (we are not doing their advertising for them), we rate prices as follows:
$30 to $34 for both of us - cheap
$35 to $39 for both of us - good
$40 or more for both of us - fair
...however, paying a little more was often well worth it - as you will see!
Rather than award stupid star ratings for quality, we have proceeded to praise (or assassinate) the character of all the hostels we sampled.
This guide is entirely based on our own observations and opinions, and is not intended for any commercial gain.
Enjoy!
