Ellis Island

Ellis Island served as an immigrant depot from 1892 until 1954. Nearly 17 million people passed through here and dispersed all over the country in what was one of the greatest waves of immigration. However Ellis Island lay in ruin until it underwent a $156 million renovation. In 1990, it reopened as a musuem with exhibits such as Through America's Gate and Peopling of America, which explain the "melting pot" formed in New York. The Statue of Liberty Ferry makes a stop here before heading back towards Manhattan.
