This early neo-gothic skyscraper was designed by Cass Gilbert in 1913. Standing at 792 ft (241 m) and 60 stories high, it held the title of the world's tallest building until 1930, when the Chrysler Building was erected. Nicknamed "the Cathedral of Commerce" the Woolworth Building was commisioned by Frank W. Woolworth, owner of a multi-million dollar chain of five and ten cent stores. However, Woolworth's went out of business in 1997 and the building is now owned by the Witkoff Group.
