The Mokoros
We went for a mokoro ride during our stay at African Horseback Safari Camp as the late afternoon drifted into sunset. The water level being low in the delta, the mokoros are pushed along by a person in the stern with a long pole. It looks a lot easier than it actually is. The locals use these shallow boats as a method of transportation, both to get from village to village and also for hunting and fishing. The silence of the skimming mokoro in the water makes for a successful hunt as the hunters are able to maneuver very close to the animals.
The back of my shirt says, "All you can do is smile, smile, smile...." and this most enjoyable mokoro ride brought smiles to our faces as we cajoled our mokoro pusher into serenading us with an African melody and we drifted into a most enjoyable sunset.
Oh no, what's this? Another tea in the African bush? More food?
