Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Can I drive in my state if I am suspended in any state?

Yes you have the international right to drive that no state can take away from you. This IDL is what foreigners use to drive here legally. They are known and accepted.

How long is my IDL valid?

It is valid for 10 years from date of issue. You will receive a letter from us in 9½ years to renew.

Does the IDL have a picture on it?

Yes, but you have to put it on them yourself. You see, this is not a little fake ID card. Those are not legal. This IDL is a standard worldwide issue. It looks like a little passport book. It comes in 11 languages all stamped, numbered, dated and signed. All you have to do is attach a standard passport-size photo to the inside back cover, sign it and start driving.

Can I get obtain automobile insurance with this IDL?

Yes. Read our insurance page for more information.

What name can I put on this IDL?

The law states that you can put ANY first name, but you must use your legal last name. Most people just put their middle name as their "first name" on the IDL. That way, even if the name is run through a database, no records will be found. This is just so you are not issued points in the event you are going to be given a moving violation. Also, your middle name will match your passport and you won’t look like a crimina1 with a fake name - your middle name is still YOUR name.

Can I put my full legal name on the IDL?

Yes, but if the name on the IDL matches any DMV records, you will get points on your record if you get a ticket.

What country is this IDL issued from?

This IDL is issued from the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. This is because you cannot use IDLs in the country of issue, only OTHER countries. Thus, if issued from there, you are completely valid and legal HERE...or any other country other than the Bahamas. You are provided with a house address in the Bahamas as part of our service, thus satisfying the law.

Is my social security number on this IDL?

No. A social security number is not even required to get an IDL.

Can I show this IDL to a police officer if I get pulled over?

Yes, this is a valid IDL and you can show it to anyone. Most police have seen them because IDLs are used by foreign visitors. We artificially make you a foreigner by providing you with a resident address in the Bahamas. You can tell the officer that you have a house in the Bahamas and that you are here on business, both of which are absolutely true,

What about car registration and license plates?

You cannot use this IDL to register a car, get license plates, or buy a car. If you have problems with the DMV, it is suggested that you do not drive a car registered in your name. If you get pulled over they will run the name or the registration and find your DMV record. You will lose all the benefits of not having a DMV with this IDL.

For maximum protection, you should have the car registered in someone else's name, or a company name. Remember, if no DMV record is found, no points can be issued. You can drive a car registered to you and still be legal, but you will not gain all the benefits of this IDL.

Does this IDL affect my citizenship? Is it a passport?

No. You are allowed to have a residence in another country. It is not a passport.

Is it true that I need to have a valid drivers license to get an IDL?

No. This is a common misconception because some foreign organizations that issue IDLs require you to show a drivers license to get an IDL. The actual international law RECOMMENDS you have a government-issued drivers license, but does not require one.

What are the requirements?

You need to be at least 18 years old and physically able to drive. There are no tests required per international law.

Do you guarantee these IDLs are legal?

You will receive a full refund of the purchase price if you provide us with a letter from any DMV or police department stating that this IDL is not valid. We require this letter to be on official letterhead and signed by an official of that organization. The reason we wish the proof to be in writing is because many times people call the police department or DMV, and are told that the IDL is not valid. It’s easy for anyone to say that these are not legal, but if they are willing to sign their name to the fact, then you deserve to believe them and get a full refund of your purchase price. It should be noted that we have never had to issue such a refund because these IDLs are 100% legal.

The law says something about the IDLs not being accepted after 6 years. Explain.

Yes, the international law says something about the country not having to extend the benefit of an IDL to someone who remained in the country for a period of 5 years. The law says the they do not have to honor it if you never leave the country for 5 years, but from experience we know, for a fact, that they always DO honor it.

This has not been an issue and we doubt that it ever will become one. Who knows when the five years actually starts? Do you think the cop who pulled you over knows when your five years started?

To solve this problem. Your IDL is automatically renewed, after five years. However, you are required to get a new IDL every ten years.

The international law refers to "Contracting States". What is a "Contracting State"?

A "Contracting State" is a country that belongs to the United Nations, not a state of the USA.

What does the IDL look like?

The IDL looks like a passport booklet. The pages consist of the same information on each page, but in 11 languages. It comes to you officially stamped and dated, ready for your photo and signature. This IDL is NOT one of those fake ID cards. This is the real thing. You can confidently show it to government authorities.

Is it a photo ID? How do you get my picture on it?

Yes. It is a valid photo identification. Your IDL comes to you ready for you to attach your passport photo on the inside back cover. This photo should be a

passport photo and these photos generally cost around $10.00.

Just get one and paste it on the IDL and sign the IDL. You can start driving with it immediately. Lamination is not required law and is not recommended.

How long does it take to receive the IDL?

Approximately two weeks (sometimes sooner). No weekend or holiday delivery is available.

How many IDLs have you issued? How long have you been doing this?

The company issues several thousand a year and has been doing it for the past three years.
