Suao Port
The Port of Suao, surrounded by mountains on
three sides, faces
at its southeastern part the Pacific Ocean. The
total water area of
the port is about four square kilometers
Hualien Harbour
Hualien Harbour is the largest international
port on the Taiwan
East Coast.
Taroko Gorge
Taroko Gorge, 17 miles northwest of Hualien city,
is near the east
estuary of the Liwu Stream. The entire gorge
is cut out of marble.
Sheer cliffs rise high around the turbulent mountain
streams.
Statue of Wen Tien-Hsiang at Tienhsiang
Tienhsiang, 450 meters above sea level, is located
at the junction
of Taosai and Liwu Streams. One favourite sopt
is the statue of
Wen Tien-Hsiang, hero of the Sung dynasty (960-1279)
with the
inscription of his "Song of Righteousness".
Tayuling
Tayuling is 2,565 m above sea level. The bus
station there is the
highest in Taiwan. Tayuling is the demarcation
line of the east and
west sections of the Cross-Island Highway.
Mt. Liyu (Carp) at Taitung
The mountain gets its name from its shape resembling
a carp. On the
mounatin are the Lungfeng pagoda and temple,
which attracts many
pilgrims.
Chihpen Hot Springs at Taitung
The springs at Chihpen are located 21 km southwest
of Taitung
county. Waters of the springs are of good quality.
Among attractions
in the area are Chinchueh Temple and Chihpen
Forest Recreation
Area.
Lanyu (Orchid Island)
Lanyu is the home of the Yami, the smallest and
most primitive tribe
of aborigines in Taiwan. The Yami number only
2,600, but among
them survives a way of life of remarkable simplicity
and vitality.
Lanyu, which is situated 49 nautical miles southeast
of Taitung,
covers an area of 45 square km.
Liyu (Carp) Lake at Hualien
Located at the foot of Mt. Mukua, the lake is
18 km south of
Hualien on the East Coast. The lake, 104 hectares
large, is
surrounded by mountains and the area is incredibly
beautiful.
Wenshih School at Penhu
Located in Makung, capital of Penhu, the school
was built in the
Ching dynasty (1644-1911). Built with "Wen" stone,
a unique
product of Penhu, the temple was originally dedicated
to the God
of Wenchang ang cultural heroes of the Sung dynasty
(960-1279).
Now it has become a Confucious temple.
Penhu Inter-Island Bridge
The bridge links the islands of Paisha and Hsiyu.
Measuring 5,541
meters in length, it is praised as the longest
inter-island bridge in
Far East.
Chiaochi Waterfall
The site is about three kilometers from Chiaochi
railway station. It is a three-layer waterfall,
five
meters in width and 200 meters in length.
