LiLi’s Weekend Stories - Jul3Wk98 (Bon Odori)

Entry: 20.7.1998

Hi people!

Thank goodness for today being a holiday.... else, I would be fishing like crazy at the office. No movies last weekend although the selections coming soon are quite tempting especially on the action themed shows like Lethal Weapon 4 (although I have always enjoyed LW series, I honestly can't remember what happened in the first three LWs). Then, there is Stormriders (me - long time didn't watch any Chinese movies) - saw a bit of the preview - the special effects is really good.

But let me focus on what happened last weekend. There was this Japanese Dance Festival (Bon Odori) on Saturday at Matsushita National Panasonic in Shah Alam (Kim Lee, did you go too?). Went there with my ex-housemates. Aiyo... so many people lah... mostly all youngsters. It really felt like the whole of Klang Valley's teenagers decided to make the stadium there as their hangout that weekend. The car had to be parked (1km?) away.

At the middle of the stadium, a stage was erected which looked like a boxing match about to precede. The players were our own Malaysian girls, dressed up in kimonos, dancing to the traditional Japanese songs. The fun part was the audience surrounding the stage get to immitate the movements of the dancers. I guess I enjoyed the first part, where we get to make a circle and doing some simple moves (fortunately no Michael Jackson stuffs). I liked the part when we get to move either left or right in circles while holding hands (ahem... not that I'm holding hands with ultra-leng-chai.... no offence Keen Wu! The other unknown fella macam belasan tahun aje...). So we get to "drag" or get dragged to the right and left at alarming speed...

At another part of the field, food stalls selling tempura or other Japanese foodstuffs like sushi rolls could be found.

So... what did I think of it all? Mmm... unfortunately I did a mistake of setting some expectations. I had expectations of getting to know what Bon Odori was about, expectations of seeing "real" Japanese performed with full make-up. Maybe, all that did happened earlier since we were quite late for the event.

The night was followed by a futile attempt at Sunway Pyramid to catch Lethal Weapon. "Nearly" watched Great Expecatations but when "relining" back, the tickets were gone.... So in replacement, as usual, one of our favourite Malaysian activities - "supper" at mamak stalls.

The next day went down to Sec. 14 P.J. to find EC. By the way, the journey from KL to Subang Jaya USJ was slightly exciting since I wasn't too sure whether I took the right bus to Ching Ching's house. Up till now, I still feel I'm in a huge maze when I'm at SJ. Housing areas here and there... you know what I mean....

Both EC and I, as predicted will haunt Amcorp Mall's flea market for stamps, stamps, nothing else but stamps. We had a nice walk all the way from Sec. 14 to Amcorp which I did not feel far at all. Along the way, we wished we could get free rides from the LRT (they were testing the rides).

As usual, I loved the stamps stalls. Macam cari harta karun only. At the third stall, the uncle even kasi discount for me (probably seeing me so "hardworking" going through practically all the stamps in one of the boxes). Both EC and me were satisfied with our "haul" for the day...

Sigh...

Before I sign off, thanks to those friends who provided company for this weekend's stories.
