| What a climax to the season! Manchester United looking down and out pulled off the most remarkable victory in the final of the European Cup against Bayern Munich. The way the victory came about sent a shockwave throughout the football world, leaving the players and supporters of the greman side shattered. Even the United faithful could hardly believe what had happened. The game was certianly kind to United, with the germans hitting the post and the crossbar of Peter Schmeichel's upright in the second half. United were chasing the game from the 6th minute after a Mario Basler free kick was swerved around the wall on the edge of the penalty area. The ball curled past Schmiechel's left hand side into the corner of the net. United pressed but could not create a clear opportunity in the first half; only Andy Cole scooped the ball wide in a crowded box. United continued to dominate possession in the second half, but were continuously denied by the germans defient defending. After the introduction of Solskjaer and Sherringham, United looked even more dangerous. After one minute of Solskjaer's introduction, he forced a good save from Kahn after a good header following a cross from David Beckham after good interlinking play with Gary Neville. Time ticked on as the germans replaced Mattahus, who was searching for his first European Cup medal. The chance after chance came for United, with Yorke misskicking and Sherringham shooting at the keeper after a Solskjaer backheel. The game moved into stoppage time when United won a corner. Three added minutes were to be played for stoppages. Everyone packed the area including the United keeper Peter Schmiechel, creating mayhem in the box for the Bayern defenders. The ball was half cleared to Giggs on the edge of the box, he turned th eball into the path of Sherringham on the six yard line who steered the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. That goal sent fans into hysteria, the entire stadium could not believe it. The germans were stunned, thinking they had done just about enough to win the match. The after the restart, a long ball from Irwin found Solskjaer on the left near the Bayern box, he won a corner. The delivery from Beckham was headed down by Sherringham towards goal, and then hooked into the top right of the roof of the net, scoring the winner. An unbelievable season for the champions resulting in the first treble in the history of the english game. | ||||||||||||||||
