Basketball Drills

Do at least 2 times a week at game speed.

  1. Warm-up Ball Handling (10 times each)
    1. Circles – clockwise (CW)
      1. Overhead
      2. Waist
      3. Knees
      4. Right leg
      5. Left leg
    2. Reverse circles – counter clockwise (CCW). Start with left leg and work back to head.
    3. Figure 8 between legs – CW & CCW
    4. Scissors – CW & CCW
    5. Figure 8 – One bounce (bounce ball between legs) – CW & CCW
    6. Figure 8 – Two bounces (bounce ball outside leg and in between legs) – CW & CCW
    7. Rhythm
    8. Popcorn – 1 or 2 balls
  2. Shoot five (5) free throws and record.
  3. Time Drills (30 seconds for speed and 60 seconds for endurance)
    1. Lay-up/Rebound Drill, one bounce dribble out and one bounce dribble in – Right (R) & Left (L)
    2. Drop Step/ power lay up – R & L
    3. Baby Hooks – R & L
    4. Dribble in the key, jump stop, pivot change to right or left hand.
    5. Dribble in the key, cross over between legs
  4. Shoot five (5) free throws and record
  5. Repetition Drills: Do each 10 times or make 10 shots.
    1. Jump stop/ pivot on inside foot – square up
    2. Jump stop/pivot on one foot (reverse pivot) – square up
    3. Triple threat shooting – check elbow, knee and basket line up (lock); check wrist wrinkle and ball (load) before you shoot. Say lock and load to check yourself before you shoot.
      1. Shoot from block area of basket – R & L
      2. Shoot 10 feet away from basket – R & L
      3. Shoot from an area halfway between 10 foot range and elbow of key – R & L
      4. Shoot from elbows of key
      5. Three-point line (optional)
    4. Jump shot off dribble – jab step or fake and go
    5. Jump shot off dribble – jab step or fake and crossover
    6. Defensive slide/close out
      1. Do at half speed the first two times
      2. Do at game speed the next eight times
    7. Shoot five three throws and record
