Baltimore Orioles
                           Director of player personnel Syd Thrift had high hopes of upgrading the
                          pitching staff when he and a large contingent traveled to the winter meetings
                          last week, but the club was only able to make some minor adjustments. The deal that sent
                          lefthander Jesse Orosco to the Mets for lefthander Chuck McElroy was basically an even
                          swap to separate Orosco and new manager Mike Hargrove, who didn't see eye-to-eye
                          when they were together in Cleveland.

                          The Orioles did succeed in signing backup catcher Greg Myers, but the overall makeup of
                          the club hasn't changed dramatically and the window of opportunity for making significant
                          changes is closing. If the Orioles were to open the season today, they would do so with
                          basically the same starting lineup that was projected for last season. Perhaps if veterans Will
                          Clark and Delino DeShields can stay healthy, the club will get off to a more respectable start,
                          but the consistency and depth of the bullpen remains a major issue.
