![]() The Detroit Red Wings have signed their team captain for 14 years, Steve Yzerman, to a three year extension. Though terms are not being revealed to the media, he will earn $4.975 million for this year. The 5-11, 180-pound Yzerman is eight goals shy of 600 and nine assists short of 900 for his career, totaling 1,483 points in 1,178 games. When he reaches both milestones, he will join Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne and Mark Messier as the only players to do so. Yzerman is an eight-time All-Star, registered 100 points six times -- all in a row -- is a five-time 50-goal scorer and a two-time 60-goal scorer. The 17-year veteran is ninth all-time in points, 10th in assists and 11th in goals. In 1988-89, Yzerman enjoyed one of the best seasons in league history, posting career highs with 65 goals, 90 assists and 155 points. No player besides Gretzky and Mario Lemieux has scored as many points in one season and he was voted as performer of the year by his peers, winning the Lester B. Pearson Award. It has been rumored when his contract expires, he will retire. He is currently 34 years old. |
