JERSEY CITY- The defending Eastern division champions started the new season on a sour note, losing to their rival Salisbury Steaks. In the closest matchup of the week, the Steaks were able to capitalize on the Pants' inefficiency near the goal line and capture a 23-18 victory.

SAN ANDREAS- The Faults start out 1997 with a bang, leaving Hawaii Punchless. San Andreas got point production from almost everyone and grabbed the first high points prize.

BANGOR- The new kids on the block make their presence felt by pounding the hapless Veins 34-4. It may come at a high price though, with first round pick Jerry Rice out for the season. Maine looks to be back in mid-season form already.

BOISE - Idaho bagged their first win early this year by pounding the Donors 48-23. The Bags start the season on top of the Western division for the first time in their history.

DES MOINES - In the biggest surprise of the week, the Bundle was blown away by hte Burgers 48-26. The first pick curse could land squarely on Iowa this year as the supporting cast for Favre looks suspect.

Next Week's Matchups:
Idaho (+10) at San Andreas
New Jersey (+14) at Birmingham
Iowa (+4) at Hawaii
Florida (-7) at Salisbury
Maine (+3) at Oregon
